For many businesses, health and safety is something that is looked over because they do not see the immediate dangers that the workers could be facing.

However, health and safety can play a key role in any business. Almost every country has laws regarding health and safety and following those laws is important, as it could affect your businesses future.

These regulations aren’t there for show; every year there are many professionals who have to stop working due to job-related injuries. Work related injuries can not only cause personal damage but also damage the organization which the injured works, disrupting its activities. This is one of the reasons why health and safety professionals, in some countries such as Australia, can earn up to 230 000 AUD per year in order to prevent situations like these. Here are some reasons as to why you should improve work and safety policies and how to do so!

Laws and regulations

Even if your workplace is accident-free, you might still not be respecting every law regarding office health and safety. This could lead to fines and penalties to your business. Consult these laws and act accordingly.

Identify risk

No matter where you work, there is always something that can happen to cause injuries. It is important to identify what your most imminent risks are within your business. Once you know what they are, make a plan in the event that it happens. This way, you will be prepared when it happens and you can limit any damage. This can be anything from what to do in case of fire or how to proceed if a construction worker gets injured on site. Have all ends covered! In some cases, it could literally save lives!

Reduce risk

Identifying safety risk is a good step towards a safer workplace, but ultimately, only safer work practices will make your business a safe place to work in. Are there any corners you’re cutting around which could cause injuries? If you find room for amelioration, try to create new systems of work that include safer work practice. Being prepared for unfortunate events is great but avoiding them is even better. You can ask your employees to report accidents or near accidents to be better prepared for next time.

If your employees feel happy and safe, you create a productive and efficient working environment for everyone in your business. The implications of this are huge; Companies with happy employees tend to have less absenteeism, better communication between staff and an overall better quality of the work done. A few ways this can be done is by reducing risk hazards for your employees, or simply making sure they aren’t overworked. Training your employees as they arrive and throughout their career will help create a caring and safe environment for everyone!

Having an onsite incident can be very disruptive for many reasons. Losing labour to an accident will not only disable the injured employee from working, but it will also create short or long term distress to any employees involved in the accident. This can not only leave your staff shorthanded but reduce the productivity of the remainder. It can also disrupt a company financially. There was a huge 71% increase in median payments given to serious claims in accidents since 2000. If your company is responsible, you could have to pay this, and if you aren’t financially ready, this could cause serious damage or bankruptcy. When everyone works, everyone is a winner.

Not only is health and safety a great way to increase business productivity, it is also a way to protect human lives and avoid unnecessary accidents. The overall effects of effective programs can be worth it for everyone. Don’t wait until it’s too late to make a change!
