My To-Be-Overplayed Romance

Singer Gerard Way's freshly platinum hair dye acts as an indicator for the future of their new album, "The Black Parade.” My Chemical Romance, who were launched into the public eye following their album, "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge" in 2004, released their newest CD "The Black Parade," a must-have for any post-hardcore devotee. Despite criticism from their older “grassroots” fanbase for their work with Green Day producer, Rob Cavallo, My Chemical Romance can expect to continue expanding their ever-widening circle of fans.

Their first single, “Welcome To The Black Parade,” which already has hit the number one spot on charts in the U.K., plays like the 2006 answer to the staple rock-anthem. The guitar riffs, which sound nearly Queen-like, are muted just enough to highlight Way’s mock-Freddie Mercury voice. For the old-school Romance-listener, “House of Wolves” is vintage MCR; Way wails over the dissonance in the background, altogether giving the growing feeling of everything falling slowly into rock-opera decadence.

The album is not without fault however. Fans of the band’s older work will recognize the Green Day and Good Charlotte-twinged tracks without fail; shouldn’t My Chemical Romance have grown out of complaining about “Teenagers” and their cliques by now? Nevertheless, should “The Black Parade” happen to fall into your home, expect to fight your tragically hip little sister to wrestle you for the first listen. My Chemical Romance’s soft-core rebellion, like Green Day’s “Dookie,” will bury itself into your eardrums.
