If you’re heading into allergy season and you’re dreading the perpetual runny nose and sneezes, you might want to start preparing now. There are plenty of preventative and curative measures you can take to ensure that your allergies are triggered less, and that they are easily combated when they do hit. Here are some of the top tips to help you fight the battle.

Prevention

There are simple things you can do, such as always wearing sunglasses to keep the pollen out of your eyes. Wear a mask and rid your home of dust and mold which can trigger hay fever. Don’t clean without covering your nose and mouth, and wear goggles for your eyes as well. You should also get a hold of hypoallergenic pillows and materials as far as possible, as these are designed for people just like you.Your clothes and linen may have dust mites, especially during allergy seasons, so put everything in a hot wash and kill them off. Stuffed toys, cushion covers, and curtains should not be ignored too.

Use a dehumidifier or settings on your air conditioner to prevent mold and other bacteria that thrive on humidity. Look for mold all over the house, especially windows, curtains, and blinds. Mold spores are dangerous, and you should keep watch for them throughout the year anyway. Wipe down the bathroom and kitchen surfaces with diluted bleach to help with this. Also make sure you have proper ventilation in laundry rooms, bathrooms, and basements, to prevent moisture from causing mold.

Cure

There are plenty of over-the-counter medicines that you probably already use to handle your allergic reactions. However, most of these make you drowsy, which is no good when you have work or chores to do. Purchase non-drowsy alternatives like Telfast instead, as these are designed to treat all allergic reactions from hay fever to skin rashes without making you sleepy. Additionally, what you eat and drink should contain as much vitamin C as possible. You should be getting about 2,000 mg of vitamin C daily to boost your immune system.

Other foods you should eat in your attack on the allergens include onions (about 2 g a day should do) and fish (or fish oil supplements), which is especially useful for optimal health and is naturally anti-inflammatory. A good way to improve your condition with food is to follow the Mediterranean diet, which studies have found to protect against allergies and respiratory conditions like asthma. This cuisine is not only exotic, but it is rich in the meats, fruits, and vegetables which are combative against inflammatory and allergenic agents.

With a few lifestyle changes, you can ease the burden of your allergies this season. Protect yourself and your family by keeping the house in tip top condition, and eat the right foods to prevent and combat those nasty allergens and mites.
