Your home’s roof plays an important role in protecting it from the elements, so it’s wise to carefully research all of your options when you need to replace the roof.

There are many types of roofs available these days. Many have added features that could help them last longer or reduce energy costs. Learn more about your options and select the right style for your home.

Types of Roofing Materials

Many homes use asphalt shingles for the roofing material because it’s affordable and easy to maintain. These are rectangular shingles that have tiny pieces of asphalt – small stones – attached to them. Shingles can also be made from wood, clay or stone, which gives the home a unique look. These are typically more expensive and sometimes difficult to maintain, but they will often last longer than asphalt shingles. Recently, people are starting to turn to metal roofing as a viable option. In most cases, this type of roofing comes in large panels that are installed on the roof. A metal roof can last twice as long as shingles.

Design Elements

A lot of times, the design elements of a roof – or the way that it looks – are determined by the type of material you choose. For instance, clay tile shingles give the roof a Spanish look, and architectural shingles – asphalt shingles that are varied in sizes and thickness – give the roof a more textured look. Other ways to get a unique look for the roof are to choose a roof style that has eaves – decorative elements under the roof’s overhang – or to choose a bullnose roof, which has a curved overhang.

Functional Elements

The roofing materials you choose can also benefit your home. For instance, if you select a metal roof, you probably won’t have to worry about snow building up. It just slides right off. Metal roofs can also be a big benefit in sunny areas because you can paint them a light color to reflect the sun’s rays away from the home, keeping the home cooler and reducing energy costs from running the air conditioner. Some types of asphalt shingles have small copper granules built into the shingles. Ions from these wash over the roof, preventing algae from growing. This is a smart move for someone who lives in a spot that doesn’t get a lot of sun to dry off the roof. Bullnose roofing works well on verandahs as well as the home because the curved overhang blocks off a lot of the direct sunlight. This keeps the home cooler and your verandah more comfortable. Consult with local bullnose roofing supplies for your verandah building plan to see how it works.

Considering Cost

If cost is a big concern for you, you’re not alone. Even using the cheapest materials, a new roof could easily cost you well over $10,000. A large roof made from higher quality materials could potentially cost double or triple that amount. When looking at the costs, though, it’s important to consider how long the new roof will last. In a lot of cases, spending more upfront when you get your new roof means that you won’t have to replace it as often, especially if you’re diligent about regular upkeep. These savings make the higher upfront cost worth it.

With the right roof, your home will look great and be able to endure the harshest weather. Compare the different styles of roof to see which ones appeal to you. Remember, you don’t necessarily have to stick with the same style as your current roof. Many people are able to easily make the switch to a new roofing design or material. Ask your roofer which roof is best and for other home improvement tips that can extend the life of your roof.
