10 Cool and (Really) Shocking Facts about Mobile Phones

by lenardjohnson (writer), , May 19, 2016

Amazing facts about mobile phones which will shock you.

Mobile phones have come a long way since they were first invented. Modern humans rarely spend a minute without their beloved phones by their side. We are connected to millions of others through our cell phones. If that’s not amazing enough, here is a list of unbelievably astounding facts about your mobile phone:

1. They Used to Cost More…A Lot More

Do you think your Apple iPhone 6S is expensive? Imagine being a cell phone consumer in 1983. When the mobile phone first became commercially available in the U.S. in the early eighties, they cost about $4,000 each.

2. They are Dirty

No one really equates hygiene with their mobile phones, and that is why cell phones are usually found with 18 times more bacteria than toilet handles. Your phone can be that disgusting. That’s why it’s very important to wipe it down with an antibacterial solution (without getting the liquid inside of course) once in a while.

3. Japan is Obsessed with Them

In Japan, manufacturers can’t sell mobile phones unless they are waterproof. In fact, about 90 percent of cell phones in Japan are waterproof. Why? Because Japanese teenagers use them in the shower too.

4. They are Powerful

The tiny mobile phone that you can hold in your palm has more computing power than Apollo 11; you know, that spaceflight that took human beings to the moon?

5. They are Older than they Look

The first mobile phone was invented in 1973 by scientists working at Bell Labs. The first smartphone was invented by IBM, and was commercially available by April, 1994. It had a touch screen responsive to a stylus or fingertips, features like calendar, calculator, notepad, and a not-so-hip name, “Simon Personal Communicator.”

6. They Can be Charged with Urine

If you are sick and tired of having to charge your phone using a wall socket, worry no more. Scientists at Bristol Robotics Laboratory have invented a way to charge mobile phones using urine. It’s quite easy too. You only have to pee into a pipe that goes straight into microbial fuel cells, which takes care of the rest.

7. The Most Expensive Mobile Phone is Worth More than Selena Gomez

The world’s most expensive cell phone is Apple’s iPhone 5 Black Diamond. Coated with 24-carat solid gold and encrusted with some 600 white diamonds, this beauty costs a whopping $15.3 million. That’s at least 5 million more than the net worth of teen pop star Selena Gomez.

8. Losing them Causes Phobia

Nomophobia is an actual psychiatric term used to describe the fear of being without one’s mobile phone, or the fear of losing contact via mobile phones. Though the term is widely used, actual psychologists say the fear is a form of normal anxiety.

9. They are a Historical Bestseller

The bestselling electrical gadget in history is a mobile phone. The Nokia 1100 has sold over 250 million units since its first unveiling. And it isn’t even a flip phone.

10. There are More Mobile Phones than Toilets

That’s right; people around the world have better access to mobile phones than toilets. According to a study conducted by the United Nations, out of the 7 billion estimated human beings on the planet, 6 billion have access to cell phones. In contrast, only 4.5 billion have access to toilets. Priorities, people.

So, how shocking were these facts?
