How To Get A Great Used Smartphone

by lenardjohnson (writer), , May 02, 2016

Looking to save some money on a decent smartphone? Buying used is a good way to do this, as long as you know what to check.

If you need a phone but you are trying to save yourself some money, the obvious choice is to get yourself a used phone. It will definitely be pretty risky, but with the right type of tactics employed in choosing one, you can get one that is in relatively great condition. Oh, and hopefully it won’t be one that was stolen. Every year, manufacturers release newer models of their phones. Now, you might have the itch that a lot of people have, which is to have the very latest phones out there. However, you need to be willing to sacrifice all of that in order to save yourself your hard earned money. In truth, you will probably be disappointed with the phones that you buy that are supposed to be cutting edge and top of the line.

Do Your Research Into The Prices

However, the fact that it is going to save you money doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be doing as much research as you can before you enter a deal you might regret. Just thinking about the prices for phones isn’t going to cut it anymore. You have to think about other things as well, especially because the warranty is going to be either nonexistent or severely reduced. Make sure you check for the existence of one. After this, you need to make sure that every bit of the phone is working at optimum capacity. Based on your results from these two checks, choose the right price for the smartphone you are buying on the used market.

Make Sure Your Phone Is Unlocked

One of the biggest selling points when it comes to buying a used phone is obviously the price. To ensure that you get the best price that you possibly can, you need to be willing to do a little market research. For one, you need to find out the average price for which a phone of that particular make and model is going for. Using this information, you will be able to negotiate a better deal. After this, you need to ensure that the phone you are getting is unlocked. When conducting an online search, make sure you look for the keywords “FACTORY UNLOCKED” or “UNLOCKED” in the description. This basically opens the phone up to work with a sim from your own carrier. Unlocking a phone on your own is going to cost a small fortune, as anyone who has bought iPhones used before can tell you.

Don’t Enter Any Auctions

Do not go for auctions on sites like eBay. This isn’t a matter of trust. Far from it. It is just that bidding on a phone could result in you paying a price higher than you think. Instead, go for the prices that are listed for immediate sale. Also, make sure that you check up on the price of a brand new phone from a different manufacturer with similar specs, just to be sure that you are making the smartest choice in terms of your wallet. You don’t want to find out later that you could’ve bought a new phone with a warranty for about $20 more. Always check on the price and the ability to negotiate a better deal before you buy a used phone from any source.
