Marilyn Monroe like you've never seen her

by Katy Chen (writer), Downtown Los Angeles, October 25, 2006

Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Rita Hayworth, Frank Sinatra, and Jayne Mansfield were just some of his friends, but no one in Hollywood really believed it because most people in this town like to tell tales of the rich and famous.

After the death of freelance photographer Frank Worth in 2000, his family discovered hundreds of photographs and negatives of Worth's famous friends in his West Hollywood apartment. And last night, at an opening reception ceremony at the Arclight Theatre in Hollywood, the world got a glimpse into his circle.

Most of the images have never been publicly seen, and Frank Worth was reportedly near broke when he died. Apparently, he had aspirations of becoming a director and because these were personal photos of his friends, it seemed like he did not want to exploit them for monetary gain.

Although he may have wanted to be something else, the photographs are extraordinary. They're not the glossy publicity photos from the studio days. Instead, they are funny, whimsical, intimate, and artistically and compositionally stunning. And to place the images at the Arclight is brilliant! There may not be a better place to see these rare photographs. They belong, very appropriately, framed and hung inside a movie theatre that celebrates film.
