Croatia has dozens of great summer festivals: it’s a great way to enjoy music, rest, experience the idyllic surroundings of festival sites, and explore Croatia at the same time. Here are the five festivals you should check out in 2016:
INmusic Festival, Zagreb
Held annually in Zagreb, the INmusic festival is the largest international open-air festival in the country. It features several stages, both domestic and international rock, metal, electronica and hip-hop artists, and a variety of additional side-content designed to keep festival-goers entertained all day long. This year the festival will be held from 20th to 22nd of June, and some of the bands in the lineup are Florence + The Machine, PJ Harvey, Wilco, The Kooks and Skunk Anansie, but the full lineup is yet to be released. Both the festival and its camp are located on an island in the middle of picturesque Lake Jarun; it’s a great chance to explore the Croatian capital and enjoy great music.
Held since 2003, the Seasplash festival in Pula attracts crowds of thousands, bringing performers from all over the world. There’s a variety of floors, but the festival focuses mostly on dub, reggae, ska, dubstep, world music, electronic music and hip hop. The festival venue, the Fort Punta Christo, is an old fortress surrounded by beaches and pine trees, in the vicinity of the city of Pula. The fortress and the unspoiled nature around it create a magical atmosphere, and there is a rich daily program as well, with various workshops, bazaars, sports and cultural events etc.
Ultra Europe, Split
Ultra is the famous festival brand which hosts events worldwide, returning to Split for the fourth year in a row in July. The Ultra Music Festival Split takes place in Poljud Stadium, one of the biggest venues in the country, and attracts around 150 000 visitors from all over the world; although the 2016 line-up is yet to be revealed (last year’s line-up), Ultra’s reputation and popularity guarantee that Split will see the biggest names of electronic and dance music. Although the festival itself will be held from 15th to 17th July, there a lot of side-activities and parties that whole week: there is an opening party on the 14th July, a yacht regatta four days later (where everyone can rent a boat and join this unique party on water!), and the official closing party is on the island of Vis on the 20th.
Hideout Festival, Pag
The Island of Pag is the hottest party destination in Croatia, especially the legendary Zrce Beach in the town of Novalja. No wonder it’s the location of Hideout Festival, a spectacular four day party (from 26th to 30th June) featuring top names from dance music. This year’s edition (which is the sixth overall) boasts with Jamie XX, Skepta, Gorgon City and Andy C, and the majority of the line-up is still to be announced!
This year’s edition of Soundwave saw a shift from the festival’s usual slot mid-July to the one in August – from 6th to 10th, to be precise. And that’s not the only change; this summer Soundwave will feature live art and film. Various street and mural artists from all over Europe will transform the festival site into a piece of art during its entire run, with independent films being shown during daytime. Some names on the line-up have been announced, such as Alice Russel & Fatima, Slum Village, LTJ Bukem and DJ Marky.
