An Opinion From Mr. Tangerine In Orange County

by James Hershiser (writer), Irvine, October 11, 2007

Hello, ladies and gentlemen! This is a voice coming from the Evil Empire that is behind the Orange Curtain, otherwise known as Orange County, California. Now, I know that most people (okay, everyone) thinks that there is no such thing as a voice coming from Orange County, or anything like concious thought, either, other than "Oh, my gawd! I am, like, so pretty and rich and bored...". However, I can assure you, gentle readers, that I am not pretty, not rich, and not all that bored, and in fact, there are many like myself here that are the same as I am. In fact, we even have half a brain and have opinions on things! Here, let me demonstrate...

Look at all the criminal and immoral activity going on in sports right now: NBA referees gambling, Michael Vick and his dogfighting escapades (do you think they will have a new ice skating show around that theme? "Michael Vick's Dogfighting on Ice"...), steriods everywhere you turn, (even in WRESTLING, for crying out loud...what's next, they will find the whole cast of the TV show "Grey's Anatomy" were on Human Growth Hormone too?), every sports athelete under the sun either getting caught drunk driving, with drugs, or doing fun stuff like assaults, burglaries, armed robberies, and murder...what is going on here? Do you think, possibly, it might have something to do with lots of money being in sports, causing the various sports comissioners to look like the Chief of the Keystone Kops, or even better to look like Alfred E. Neumann from Mad Magazine and have a stupid grin and state, "What, me worry"? With money, you can do a lot of things: buy lots of drugs, get into strip clubs and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, which will lead to gunfire, of course, lots of stupid stuff...Money, like power, corrupts, and lots of money corrupts, well, a lot.

How do you stop that corruption? Well, maybe people should be given something to stop or clean the rust oxydizing over their gleaming metal that is their brains, like training on good judgement, prudence, wisdom, that sort of thing? Now, I am not talking religion here: that first of all is a matter of one's faith, not their judgement, and second of all that has not been doing very well on the corruption front, either (witness the Roman Catholic Church, and Christian evangelicals like Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart, among others too numerous to count). No, I am talking about the strait teaching of mental morality and discipline that I would call Good Judgement: an example would be, "Gee, if you stick your finger in a electrical socket, you are very likely to electricute yourself. Oh, and if you get a lot of money by being an athlete, you should be very careful with that, because if you use it unwisely, you will end up poor, screwed up, in jail, or dead. Oh, and ditto on the drugs and the gambling, too." I don't see that being taught or promoted very much: do you? It is an absolute necessity, however: with power or money must come the good judgement and discipline to use it wisely, otherwise nothing but bad things will come of it, as many have learned to their sorrow. Life is a cruel teacher: you WILL learn things, whether you like it or not, and whether it is the easy way, or the hard way. I don't know about YOU, but I would rather learn it the easy way and not go through the humiliation, pain and suffering: I have enough of that stuff just living normal life, as that describes driving the freeways of Southern California every day.

See, that is an opinion! And it was half-way intelligent! Remember, gentle readers, there IS real people here in the OC, like yours truly, Mr. Tangerine: just remember that the next tine you roll your eyes at someone from Orange County, and ponder this thought: I have to live NEXT to them! Ooohh, scary!

Great start, Mr. T. There is SO much going on in this piece... I think you'd best best served to pick just a couple of these opinions and explore them more deeply. As witty as they all are, I find myself at the end trying to remember any of them.
