A Conversation With The Bronx Bull

by 'Mean' Mike Duffau (writer), I'm the boss!, October 12, 2007

It looks like my other article about the Bronx Bull is a knock-out. I'd like to treat you folks with another telephone conversation, starring Jake Lamotta. It was recorded on August 28, 2007. I don't consider this an interveiw because I usually call him out of the blue and strike up a chat. To the reader it seems like he's annoyed with me and he lets me have it at times. He's not! That's just the way he is. There's no lying in him. It's comical in some moments and then the hard reality sets in and takes a turn.
How many of us can say that we get the opportunity to speak with an idol from our childhood? When you have an opening shot to take a punch... You gotta' punch. It'll never come again. Enjoy!

Jake: Hello.
Me: Hey champ! How's it going today?
Jake: Who is this?
Me: This is Mike. I'm harry's step-son.
Jake: Refresh my memory.
Me: Sorry?
Jake: Refresh my memory.
Me: Last month I came to visit you, and Harry...
Jake: Wait a minute! Let me turn down the t.v.(pause) o.k.
Me: O.k. I came to visit you four days before your birthday last month and I'm Harry's step-son...the guy that works downstairs in the lobby in your building.
Jake: Yeah, what about it?
Me: Remember, I sent you a picture and it has me and you on it and I signed it... It says 'Happy Birthday Champ.'
Jake: Yeah, I remember.
Me: You remember now?
Jake: Yeah.
Me: Oh cool! So I'm glad you got it! Did you like it?
Jake: It's alright.
Me: (laughs)"It's alright!" you're funny man! So how you doing these days, champ?
Jake: Ok, what can I do for you?
Me: Are you in the mood to do the 'On The Waterfront'?
Jake: "Do the On The Waterfront?" what do you mean?
Me: The 'On The Waterfront' speech.
Jake: When?
Me: Can you do it today? Right now?
Jake: Where? On the telephone?
Me: Yeah!
Jake: No! I don't want to do that thing on the telephone! What do you think I am?
Me: I'm just askin' champ cause its my favorite speech...
Jake: No no! Anything serious you want to talk to me about...otherwise I can't bother!
Me: Ok, I was just askin'. I was just askin'. Listen champ, I wanted to ask you something about boxing if you don't mind?
Jake: Go ahead.
Me: Ok. How...
Jake: Don't take too long because this girl here screams.
Me: How come your battles with Fritzie Zivic weren't as popular as the ones with you and Sugar Ray(Robinson)?
Jake: Well, Sugar Ray is the greatest fighter.
Me: What about Fritzie Zivic?
Jake: He's ok.
Me: Yeah?
Jake: He's ok. He's a welterweight champeen.
Me: Right...
Jake: Former welterweight champeen.
Me: Right! Yeah! You fought him four times. I'm just curious how come those battles with Fritzie Zivic weren't as popular as the ones with Sugar Ray?
Jake: How old are you?
Me: I'm 34 years old.
Jake: You wouldn't understand. You're too young.
Me: Oh...I just read up a lot about you champ.
Jake: I know. You're too young to understand. Same thing!
Me: Ok. No problem. Hey champ...
Jake: Where you calling from?
Me: I'm calling you from los angeles.
Jake: You're calling me from los angeles?
Me: Yes sir!
Jake: And that's all the time you have to do all day long is to call long distance to talk to me?
Me: I just came back from working out. I'm a boxer myself and I just had some time to kill and wanted to keep in touch with you and give you a call just to say 'hi' and talk to you...
Jake: That's a hell of a past time you got there.
Me: How much time??
Jake: That's a hell of a past time you have. You take your time. You must be pretty good!
Me: Oh yeah! You know I do my research. You're my childhood hero champ.
Jake: Yeah??
Me: You're my childhood hero. I'm...
Jake: You got alotta' guts!
Me: I got alotta guts?
Jake: Yeah.
Me: You know, people tell me that champ. You're not the first one to tell me that. Let me ask you something... Do you have a fan club?
Jake: Yeah, I do.
Me: Oh really! Because I made a myspace... Are you familiar with myspace?
Jake: Your what?
Me: It's an internet site called myspace.
Jake: Your place?
Me: No no. It's called myspace.
Jake: Myspace?
Me: Yeah, myspace.com. Have you heard of it?
Jake: No.
Me: I made a tribute...
Jake: I have somebody for my fan club. He's been with me a long time. I just know him like this like that... He handles all my fan mail.
Me: Oh is that right? Because I made a myspace tribute on your behave and I have a lot of pictures and articles about you. I get a lot of good responses because people think it's you...
Jake: I can't bother with these things. I'm too old for this crap!
Me: oh...
Jake: Do you know how old I am?
Me: I'm sorry?
Jake: Do you know how old I am?
Me: You're 86 years old champ.
Jake: I'm really 85.
Me: You're 85?
Jake: Yeah.
Me: Oh so...
Jake: I can't be bothered these things at my age.
Me: I understand champ. Like I said you're my childhood hero and I wanted to pay you respects...
Jake: I'm not younger here to worship.
Me: I'm sorry??
Jake: I'm not younger here to worship because I'm too old.
Me: Champ, you're never too old. Don't say that!
Jake: I am too old. I can't be bothered with these things.
Me: Ok champ.
Jake: Ok, take care of yourself and good luck to you.
Me: Hey, do you mind if I keep in touch or what?
Jake: Naw, really it's unnecessary. It really is in this time of my life.
Me: Ok, I respect that...
Jake: Pick up something important to do and don't go wasting your time on me. Thank you and God bless.
Me: God bless you too champ. Thank you very much.
Jake: Right.
Me: Bye bye.
