An Exciting Ending to Begin October's Magic

by Jeff Weisinger (writer), New York, NY, October 03, 2007

The 2007 Major League Bsaeball season was probably one of the most memorable baseball seasons that we have seen in a long time.
One can say that it was historical.
Barry Bonds finally became the All-time home run leader, the Philadelphia Phillies lost their 10,000th game in franchise history and becamse the first professional sports team to lose 10,000 games in franchise history and still win their division, the Boston Red Sox are AL East champions for the first time in 12 years, and Todd Helton will finally get a chance to play in October as his Colorado Rockies made the playoffs for the first time...ever.
It was also historically disappointing for some teams.
The season's strongest teams failed to make the playoffs as they completely collapsed in September.
The New York Mets were heavily favored to win the NL East title, but were unable to hold a seven-game lead over the surging Philadelphia Phillies with 17 games left in the season, and are now watching the playoffs from home.
The San Diego Padres, who were favored to take the NL West, forced a one-game playoff against the Colorado Rockies on Monday NIght, but Padres' closer Trevor Hoffman was unable to shut the door against the Rockies, which sent Colorado to the playoffs.
The New York Yankees wil not be division champions going into October for the first time in almost ten years. After being down 14 games to the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees began to claw their way back into the AL East hunt in September, but it was too little too late.
So with all this in mind, we have two underdog teams in the playoffs in Colorado and Phliadelphia, two teams upset in the end of September in the Mets and Padres, and a "changing of the guard" in some divisions with the Phillies taking the NL East title over the Mets, the Red Sox taking the AL East title over the Yankees, and the Arizona Diamondbacks taking the NL West title over the Padres.
With all this in mind, and the way the season ended, and down-to-the-wire as it may be, this October will probably be the most magical playoff season we have seen since 2001.
So America, are you ready for some October baseball?
