Solenoid Valves – Serving as Foundations for Medical Science

With their invaluable contribution to medical sciences, it isn't surprising that solenoid valves are constantly subjected to improvements and incorporated in multiple devices.

How it Works

Solenoid valves are basically electromechanical devices utilized for controlling the flow of either liquid or gas. Its main component involves solid steel and iron with a wire wrapped around it. Electricity is passed through the solenoid coil, turning it electromagnetic upon which, it acts like a valve that directs the flow of gaseous or liquid matter.

Why Solenoid Valves?

There’s no doubt that other devices can be used to achieve the same flow direction offered by these valves – so why exactly is this favorite? Following are some of the advantages of this particular method:

  • They are very clean means of controlling the flow of matter which is crucial when it comes to medical devices. With zero chances of contamination, hospitals and medical laboratories are confident in using them to deliver and develop life-saving components.
  • Delivery Precision – it is often unnecessary to go beyond 1 bar during the delivery of liquid/gas in medical situations. Solenoid valves are capable of hitting this sweet spot to facilitate proper delivery without harming the patient. If need be however, the power of the valve can be increased without any problem.
  • The chances of leakage are very small, thanks to the preciseness of the flow and power delivered through the valve.
  • Highly reliable and wonderfully responsive, the combined characteristics of solenoid valves make them perfect for meeting FDA standards.
  • Lightweight, these valves are often incorporated in medical devices that are easy to move around, increasing the level of access for patients.

    So what exactly are these valves used for? Here are just some of the instances where these valves are considered invaluable:

  • New Face of Solenoid Valves

    As already explained, they are constantly being upgraded to help the medical community with their research and development. Today, these valves have evolved into more compact, reliable, and portable devices that make them easier to use for every day hospital needs.

    In the future, however, technicians hope to enjoy what are known as “Smart Solenoid Valves” capable of acting based on a specific preset to further ease the way of medical practices. Digital technology will hopefully become the norm for the production of these valves, contributing largely to the therapeutic needs of the patient.

    For example, a solenoid valve is currently being used to automatically deliver oxygen to a sleeping patient. Should there be a respiratory distress, then the rate of oxygen absorbed suffers a dramatic drop. When this happens, the smart valve manages to identify they discrepancy in the absorption of oxygen and instantly triggers a higher dose of release to increase the patient’s chances of inhaling the gas. At the same time, a distress signal will be called out to the nurses and attending so that they would be able to check and see what the problem is. Of course, this is just an example of what the future holds for solenoid valves.

    Thanks to their flexibility, solenoid valves are typically manufactured in a standard format. Some manufacturers however have widened their range, creating solenoid valves to order and customizing these devices to fit the needs of clients. This kind of flexibility only opens further doors in the medical community as valves serve as building blocks of better health care.
