Angry and Unfortunately Not Forgotten

by Wild Bill (writer), Around this place, August 11, 2007

I went to check out a library book the other day. I'm a writer, and I'm currently working on a crime thriller. So I loaded up on all the crime novels possible: crime scene investigation, fingerprinting, interviewing techniques and kinseology, etc. When I walked away from the desk, the librarian pointed at me. I thought maybe she was flirting or talking me up to her girlfriends.

And, then it dawned on me, a melancholy realization buried in bitter snow. I'm now a marked man. Because of my choice of literature, I'm now being watched. It's Orwellian, I know. But, it's also true. We no longer are allowed privacy in what we read, which means no privacy in what we want to know, to learn, to be. It has been taken away from us viciously in the night like some serial rapist laughing from afar.

The word "terrorism" pops into my mind now. Maybe to comforting assuage my fears, rub my belly, make me feel better, offer some reason. But when will that stop? And how does fear play into winning a so-called "war on terror". Every time I feel our rights within reach that word is hurled at us, and half of us run and hide while the other half cowers. We're the fat kid in dodgeball. We're too afraid to challenge the line or challenge the team. We're just waiting for our eventual slaughter. We allow ourselves to be manipulated by words and warning levels and gut feelings.

I guess I'm writing this because I'm sad. The first amendment, a tragically bloodstained document, our own legacy, is in danger of dying. And, I, for one, am scared.

The war on terror can never be solved, it is an endless war where no body wins and everybody goes home with mud on their shoes.

Great post...
