Most businesses have a "No Phones" policy, but this article will explain why allowing employees to have their own devices may actually increase their productivity.

The latest trend that's on the rise in workplaces is the emergence of "bring your own device," or BYOD programs. Basically, these programs allow employees to use their own technology to access company files and programs. At first the idea of opening up this sensitive information to outside technology had IT directors reeling and trying to figure out how to keep their networks secure. But as time passed, employers are really starting to see the major benefits of implementing these programs. Here are a few reasons to allow your employees to use their personal phones (and other gadgets) at work.

Your Tech Budget is Strained

Keeping up with the changing technology landscape is a huge expense for any company. When you allow employees to select their own devices and utilize them to further their careers, you inherently alleviate the burden of purchasing them yourself. Of course, it's unlikely that every single employee will wish to partake in a BYOD program, but opening up the possibility will undoubtedly ease the burden of updating equipment as it becomes dated.

Furthermore, BYOD programs have been shown to boost employee productivity through a number of factors. Between saving on the tech budget and enabling employees to be more productive, it all amounts to a better bottom line. Even if you don't end up fully implementing a full-fledged BYOD program, allowing your employees to use their own devices for official functions will make them less likely to request upgrades for their primary tools, which will allow you to stretch that tech budget even further.

It's More Convenient for Employees

Most employees bring a personal device with them to work, regardless whether they intend to use it for work-related purposes. It's simply a matter of being connected. In addition to this personal device, many employees also cart around a company-issued device for work-related functions. By allowing them to utilize those personal devices to get access to company data and programs, as well as keep all their information centrally located on one device, employers will cut out that additional device cost.

Many devices these days come with settings that make it possible to completely separate work-related information from personal information. This procures a healthy work/life balance, which is a concept that is of great concern these days.

It Empowers Employees by Giving Them More Freedom

When it comes to using technology, we all have our personal preferences. Whether it's an operating system or specific device, everyone has their own favorites. Allowing employees to use their personal favorites often empowers them to do more and go above and beyond what is generally expected of them. It also serves as a show of faith on the part of the employer, which many employees might take to mean that their employer trusts them to complete their work on their own terms.

You can take part in enterprise mobility management systems that allow your IT department to set up security functions and monitor employee use to protect the safety of the programs and sensitive files they will be accessing, either remotely or in-house.

There are many pros and cons to allowing employees to use their personal phones, tablets, and laptops at work. Before you decide to implement one of these programs, it's best to poll employees to find out where they stand on the matter. It's also a good idea to meet with your IT department so that you can weigh their concerns as well, and help you decided whether it's a good idea, and in what capacity.
