Because I am a Soldier

by Paul Anthony (writer), Cumbria, United Kingdom, November 30, 2013

A poem to share with those who have family in far off places at this time.

For my family, and if you have someone fighting somewhere...for you...

Because I am a Soldier

~
I stood at the gate and watched him go;
To fight for our country, to defeat the foe.
She stood on the tarmac and waved away his flight;
Shielded her tears until he was in the clouds, out of sight.
A grandchild’s young voice, trembling and sad,
said, ‘Daddy’s just gone to fight the bad.’
Medal ribbons, uniform, camouflage through and through.
The flag on his battledress: red, white and blue.
He’ll shoulder close to the Maple Leaf,
Canada’s best in need of relief.
And then, nearby, the Stars and Stripes;
And all our other military types.
I held his gaze as a father might do,
I’d only one question and an answer was due.
So I queried the father who is a son,
Thinking of the 22, he’s served and done.
‘Why?’
I asked as he stepped away.
Turning, he said,
‘Because I am a soldier, everyday.’
We shall pray for you,
One of our glorious fighting few...
~
Freedom is not a right, it has to be earned...
