A filmmaker and writer since childhood, Mike has directed numerous shorts, music videos, documentaries, promotional videos and two feature films (NO EXIT and TRIPTOSANE). His first novel, Milky Way Marmalade received rave reviews and was the winner of the 2003 Dream Realm Award.
He is very excited about the release of the first of his exciting new kid-lit series, RUPERT STARBRIGHT: The Door to Far-Myst.
Mike, a certified Yoga instructor, has many interests including gardening (loves growing chili peppers in his rooftop garden), playing guitar, cats (long-time volunteer at NYC’s Ollie’s Place Adoption Center), really good and really bad movies and 70s TV as well all kinds of geeky stuff. He is a dedicated MST3K fanatic. He thinks of music as his religion—especially Classic Rock.
He lives quite contently in a NYC apartment with his wife and soul mate, Suzy and their rescued kitties, Cosmo and Rupert. You can visit Mike’s website at www.mikedicerto.com
1.What inspired you to write your first book?
MD: I have loved making up stories and living in the world of my imagination as far as my memories serve me. My first published novel was a calling of my two great loves: classic rock music and funny science fiction. Milky Way Marmalade, about Rock Music saving the Univese
2.What books have influenced your life the most?
There have been three. 1. The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot was one of those life-changing mind-blowing books that opened my thinking to the incredible possibilities of the nature of reality. 2. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was just my cup of British tea. His magic with hilarity captured me from page one. When a reviewer compared my to Douglas Adams in his review of Milky Way Marmalade – I felt like I had just partaken of three Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters. 3. Dr. Seuss’s ABC Book. The good Doctor tickled my imagination with his bold and acrobatic word play and has had a major influence on me as a writer as a yellow zizzer ziter!
3.What are your current projects?
A Young adult science fiction novel.
4.If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
No. Not a word.
5.What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author?
I have been lucky so far as far as reviews are concerned. But I do recall a reader saying that Milky Way Marmalade “sucked like a Hoover”!
6.What has been the best compliment?
I am very thankful for all the positive reviews. Here is one that made me feel great:
"The Door to Far-Myst", Book 1 in the Adventures of Rupert Starbright, is the start of a promising new fantasy series from a very talented author. DiCerto has created a brilliant fantasy world full of unique landscapes inhabited by quirky characters and creatures. Young readers will easily identify with Rupert's struggle to understand the power of his own imagination and still find plenty of adventure and unanswered questions to keep them eager for more.
7.Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?
Yes. Write. Every day. What you love. And read diversely and NOT only fiction. Non-fiction will serve your fiction more than other author’s fiction will.
8.What is your favorite quality about yourself?
I have a very colorful imagination and I am very disciplined as a writer.
9.What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
I can be impatient and slip into very grumpy moods when I am struggling with a project.
