BHCP LIVE! with Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick the Ruler
By Ricky Richardson
Los Angeles-The Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza popular BHCP LIVE! is the place to be throughout the Summer months in Los Angeles. They have already hosted R&B band Loose Ends and Klymaxx-an all-female R&B/funk group. The Mall collaborated with the Playboy Jazz Festival for a special concert featuring 1+One consisting of Patrice Rushen and Ndugu Chancler with special guest Paul Jackson Jr. and The Harmony Project. Several weeks ago, Alexander O'Neal and Cherrelle graced the stage.
Thursday, July 11th brought some unusual Summer rain early in the morning. Most of the day remained overcast and gray. People will remember this day not only for the weather, but also for the concert that was on the bill for the evening. The East Coast was well represented in the special appearance of Doug E. Fresh & The Fresh Crew and Slick Rick The Ruler.
DJ Paradise turned this event into a party that was all the way live. He set the mood for the evening with some classic Old School tracks with "Flashlight," and "Funkin' for Jamaica" grooves to make your body move. The crowd responded in kind with some popular dance moves of the era.
The Fresh Crew worked the crowd before being joined onstage with Doug E. Fresh. They took the crowd back to school with "Where the Party At," "Back in he Dayz" while sampling the theme songs for Fat Albert, Sanford and Sons, The Jeffersons and Good Times.
Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick The Ruler set it off with a flurry of rap, rhymes and rhythms that flowed fluidly from tune to tune. The audience favorite tune was "Ladi Dadi." A group of young kids were invited onstage to dance to "Teach Me How to Dougie" to the delight of a captivated crowd.
