June 7, 1979, former President Jimmy Carter officially recognized the cultural and financial contributions of Black music by declaring the month of June as Black Music Month.
In 2009, President Barack Obama defined June as African-American Music Appreciation Month(source National Museum of African American Music).
May 3, 2013- President Barack Obama issued a Proclamation declaring June, African-American Music Appreciation Month. "African-Americans have always had a hand in shaping the American Sound. From Gospel and Motown to bebop & blues, their story is bound up in the music they made--songs of hurt and hardship, yearning & hope and struggle for a better day."
