Temple aka Mike "Tempo," is the founder and percussionist of the popular band, the Bonedaddys. One of the first American bands labeled as “world-beat,” the Bonedaddys recorded six albums as well as having a performance for PBS catalogued into the Library of Congress. The band also played and recorded with Bo Diddley.
Throughout his long career as a musician, Temple has continued to pursue his other passion…painting. His work has been a part of many exhibitions in cities such as Kansas City, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. In April of this year, his work was featured at both the Santa Monica Airport ArtWalk and Trunk Gallery. His work was most recently featured as part of the “Rose Respectives” series at the Rose Café in Venice.
Temple is looking forward to the opening. “They picked some good pieces with a range of styles,” says Temple. Temple is constantly working, painting almost every day. When asked if he paints with sales in mind, he replies, “People seem to like the work regardless the style, of course some more than others. I really don't paint with commerce in mind, although I'll have to admit I've never been tempted with commercial success. I just want to make a few good paintings. For me nothing is precious but the progress...and sometimes I end up with a good painting in the process. My impulse to paint daily if possible is because I used up all of my spare time in my misspent youth!”
Owner Michael Hale is involved in every aspect of the gallery and was intrigued when he first saw Temple’s work.“We look for talented work that moves us... That makes us smile, makes us think, feels good to be around, makes us feel something. Color has a very prolific affect on me personally and I truly appreciate each artist’s technique to relay their message.”
Each week the gallery meets new artists from all over the Los Angeles area. Hale admitted he thought putting the art of Michael Temple and Karen Sikie together in one exhibit was a great pairing.
The opening reception will be held on Friday, July 12, at haleARTS S P A C E (2443 Main St., at Edgemar Center in Santa Monica) from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The exhibition will be on view through July 24th. The art of Karen Sikie will also be on view.
