Star colts Sizzling, Your Song and Epaulette will bid to continue the recent dominance of three-year-olds when bidding for victory in the $1million Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday.
The trio of three-year-olds head the betting for the Group 1 feature having claimed victory in three of the key lead-up races to the Stradbroke Handicap.
Sizzling moved into favouritism after returning to form in first time blinkers when winning the Queensland Guineas on Saturday. He will back up seven days later attempting to enhance a hugely impressive course record of five wins from six starts at Eagle Farm, which includes success in the Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes on Stradbroke Day 12 months ago.
Kelso Wood's stable star has been given a boost with the news he will not face a hike in the weights for his Queensland Guineas victory, but he does face a stiff challenge to follow-up in the 18-runner sprint over 1400m.
Going up against Sizzling will be the Peter Snowden-trained Epaulette, who won the Group 1 Doomben 10000 at Doomben Racecourse two weeks ago to make the perfect prep, and Anthony Cummings' Your Song, who landed the Group 1 BTC Cup on rain-soakened ground at Eagle Farm four weeks ago.
Epaulette has finished out of the first three on only two of his career starts and will be bidding to maintain that record by completing one of the hardest sprint doubles in horse racing.
Also in the field is local star Buffering, who continues his quest for an elusive Group 1 having finished in the first three on eight occasions. He was runner-up to Mid Summer Music in last year’s Stradbroke Handicap and was also fourth in 2011 for trainer Robert Heathcote.
The Stradbroke Handicap is one of the biggest betting heats of the entire year and has been won by some big names down the years including dual winner Rough Habit.
