Humans will NOT survive another 1,000 years on 'our fragile planet', states Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking has spent his career decoding the secrets pf pir universe is urging that we continue to explore space - for humanity's sake. He says, “we won’t survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet."

Seventy one year old Hawking made the statement on Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he was toureing a stem cell lab that's focused on slowing the progression of Lou Gehrig's disease. Hawking was diagnosed with the neurological disorder 50 years ago, while studying at Cambridge University.

Hawkings is world renowned for for his work on black holes and the origins of the cosmos and explaining esoteric physics' concepts to the masses --- through his best-selling books, that include A Brief History Of Time, that sold more than 20 million copies. Hawking's "goal is simple, a complete understanding of the universe."

“Your universe is a great triumph,” he told the audience. “I want to share my enthusiasm and excitement about this great quest. So remember to look up at the stars and not at your feet. ... Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.”

Hawking's call come as NASA's planetary science budget, a progam that could be crucial to finding a habitable alternatives to Earth, was cut this year by $300 million. Fortunately the Russians are getting even more serious about space exploration as Vladimir Putin announced a plan to pump roughly $52 billion into the country's space industry, and floated the idea of creating a special "space ministry," Russia Today reports.

This attached video excerpt is part of a panel discussion held at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Ontario, Canada. Leading thinkers gathered to explore Stephen Hawking's sizeable contributions to physics, his role in popularizing science and his inspirational life story.
