Nestled snuggly on Ventura Boulevard between Tampa and Winnetka sits one of Los Angelesâ€™s best Iranian restaurants: Darband. The restaurant carries the name of a lush green mountain valley in the Alborz Mountains, known for restaurants that offer excellent cuisine and unparalleled ambiance. While Darband restaurant is not in a mountain valley, but rather in â€œthe Valley,â€ it does not fail to live up to itsâ€™ namesakeâ€™s reputation for quality.
Iâ€™ve tried almost every Iranian/Persian restaurant in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Chicago, New York, Washington D.C. and San Franciscoâ€”yes Iranians love to eat Iranian foodâ€¦ everywhere we goâ€”and Darband is definitely one of the best. Darband restaurantâ€™s new management has resurrected the concepts of quality, service, and excellence in cuisine. Simply put, the food is amazing, the ambiance is warm and friendly, and the service is attentive and prompt.
I had the chicken kabob, beef kabob, and filet kabob, all with white rice and saffron, grilled tomatoes, onions, and peppers, whipped yogurt with shallots, baked and whipped eggplant with tomato, garlic, and dry mint, crispy rice, and salad.
The chicken kabob was tender and juicy (my mouth is watering as I type this review). They brought it to me hot off the grillâ€”just the way I like it. Each piece is marinated in a saffron, lemon, and butter marinade. Every bite was like an orgy of flavor in my mouthâ€”a sexy orgy, not the nasty â€˜golden-year trailer parkersâ€™ lookinâ€™ for a good time orgy, a hot chickeny orgy with porn stars, models, and quiet librarians. (Quiet librarians, you know what Iâ€™m talkinâ€™ about).
Next, the beef kabobâ€¦ Like the chicken, the beef kabob was served hot off the grill, with the juices still dripping off the skewer. It was tender and perfectly cooked (none of the raw center that can ruin the flavor of a good piece of kabob). As I ate each bite, I had to control my instinct to swallow so that I could more fully savor the flavor of this amazing dish.
Finally, the filet kabobâ€¦ Again, served hot and fresh this is by far my favorite type of kabob. Cut from the best pieces of beef, and marinated overnight, the meat was so tender that I didnâ€™t even need to use a knife to cut bite size pieces. I literally could not stop eating this food. I forced myself to eat, and, hoping to keep the gastronomic party going, I tried to will my body into digesting the food more rapidlyâ€”I am sorry to say I failed, and in doing so, I found the type of absolution that only committing one of the â€œSeven Deadly Sinsâ€ (gluttony) can offer.
In short, if you take one thing from this reviewâ€”the only one that I have ever done (the food is that good)â€”it should be that no matter where you live, the trip to Darband is definitely worth it. The price is very reasonable, and the full bar and extensive menu makes Darband the perfect place for a date or dinner party with friends and/or family. Bon appetiteâ€¦ (yeah, a little clichÃ©, but letâ€™s face it I may never get an opportunity to write an article with that phrase again).
