- What inspired you to write your first book?
SK: I've always had a fascination with words, maybe because my mother made me read the ChildCraft encyclopedias each and every summer. I had to read an hour every day, and that taught me discipline. I remember the pictures jumping off the page as I swung in the hammock. I began to daydream and concoct stories in my mind. My imagination would explode, and and I looked into the clouds, my creativity was awakened.
RK: My life experiences. I once heard a great quote from the Reverend T.D. Jakes: "Some of the greatest pains I have known have produced some of the greatest successes for people." This inspires me! I want to inspire others!
What books have influenced your life the most?
SK: The Bible has impacted all areas of my life and guides my faith. This book, Past Tense, was also strongly informed by a wide variety of philosophy texts which makes it a lot richer than the typical self-help book.
1- The Imitation Of Christ
2- Creed Or Chaos
3- Republic Of Plato
4- The Harvard Classics
RK: I am a book addict. It gives me a broad perspective to improve myself & help others.
1- The Catechism
2- The Imitation Of Christ
3- Call Me Ted
4- The Score Take Care Of Itself- Bill Walsh
5- Napoleon Hills Golden Rules
6- The Kennedy Men
What are your current projects?
SK: A Big Book of Virtues which I originally drafted in just two days!
RK: Right now, writing is a hobby for me. But we have over 55 published books published through our publishing company, American Screening Corporation. Check out our website to find books on stress, drug and alcohol abuse awareness and education for teens and parents. The website is www.americanscreeningcorp.com .
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
RK/SK: This book, Past Tense, allowed us to parlay our substantial experience dealing with people fighting addiction to write a book that helps them better their lives and heal. There's no better outcome than that; there's nothing that we would change.
What has been the best compliment?
SK: When someone tells me, "Your work has really touched me."
RK: A lady that read our book did a review. She loved the book, it lightened her heart, and gave her insight and perspective to deal daughter's drug problems.
Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?
SK: Yes, take time (and MAKE time) to write. Have faith in your abilities, and go for the gusto! The qualities you need to succeed? Perseverance, creativity, risk-taking, strong work ethic, ability to do solid research, and the willingness to keep improving your skills.
RK: I'd encourage writers to figure out what motivates them and use that to drive themselves forward. Some tips to become successful: Perseverance, Never Give Up, Contact Authors that are already successful and sold hundreds of thousands of books, Attend Trade Shows, & have Passion for what you are doing. Hint: it shouldn't be money! That will only take you so far.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?
SK: I look at the bright side of life; I'm always happy-go-lucky, always cheerful- sometimes I get excited over the littlest things: I love to write, I love my garden, I love my family, I love small things in life.
RK: My faith in God, commitment to family, heart, passion, enthusiasm, discipline to keep moving forward in life & business, and share with others my success story. I speak and write in earnest too.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
SK: I do not take enough time to slow down and breathe and enjoy myself and do what I truly want to do, which is writing. I write boring regulatory contracts!
RK: I need to learn to bite my tongue. I sometimes speak impulsively. I'll wake up the next day and wonder, "Did I really say that?"
Is there anything else you would like to share?
SK: One day I will sell my company and dedicate myself to helping the poor and those in need. I am at a point in my life where I've established extreme success and wealth. To be fulfilled, I want to use my talent or passion to help others.
RK: I am an entrepreneur, and I have experienced great pains in my life which has driven me to achieve great success. This has inspired me to write. If I can inspire someone else to keep moving forward and have faith, then I am doing my job!
