How is Hadassah relevant in 2013 Society?--is she not a figure of the past?--what does the 'Spirit of Hadassah' mean to this generation?--In the days of Esther, there was a man named Hamon, who believed that the Jewish People did not have a right to exist--Hamon's effort was to delegitimize The Nation of Israel by destroying The Jewish People--can you see the parallel?--during World War II we also witnessed Hitler's attempt to destroy The Jewish People. Likewise, today, even in 2013, terrorist organizations like Hamas, seek to once again endeavor to delegitimize the Nation of Israel--refusing Israel's right to exist--and since Israel has been the Birthing-Ground of The Jewish People--and home to Jews for thousands of years--the 'Spirit of Hamon' like the 'Spirit of Hitler' like the 'Spirit of Hamas' is severe anti-Semitism. Yet--for every 'Spirit of Hamon' there arises a 'Spirit of Hadassah'....and Purim is a party full of yum-yum Hamontaschen--yet, it is more. We remember Esther fasted before she feasted. She used her Spiritual and Political wit to change the course of Herstory!--but how?--in the Age of Hadassah, women did not vote--women were not the lawmakers. Yet--like a whisper in the wind--like a feather gliding along her Royal Husband's ear, Esther steered the course of History--like taking a sharp left turn, just before Hamon almost drove her and her people over a cliff!--but how is it that one woman can be so influential!--is there even one woman living today who can save a nation with the sway of Hadassah!--with all the liberty we women have acquired as generations evolved--it is still questionable if there is one in this generation who can compare with the greatness of Queen Hadassah!--but what was her secret?--didn't she tremble face down before her husband's royal scepter?--did she not cry out in terror when Hamon approached her as she reclined on her couch?--did she not spend her time with ashes on her head in a state of prayer?--only to become the perfect hostess--time and time again--in nervous delay--preparing to risk her life approaching the king--preparing to beseech him with her pressing question?--how could SHE be the light of hope?--she couldn't even vote--she couldn't even defy her husband--as she learned from the example of Queen Vashti before her--her mind and her will and her body--belonged to the king. Yet SHE is the reason we celebrate Purim.
SHE is the reason the Nation of Israel continued to survive and flourish. Oh what irony!--she existed before the notion of feminism came into being--yet she had more sway than three tidal waves of an entire movement. And for that reason--we may call her: Enigma....like the hidden filling in a hamontaschen cookie, the sweet soul of a 'Hadassah' is born out of bitter tears--but then, in the most Davidian sense--there is a reaping of songs of joy!--that springs forth out of Hadassah's Pleas.
