Slum

by Uttam Gill (writer), BOMBAY(MUMBAI), January 25, 2013

watch the video

Life thrives too midst an inhumane condition.

I look down at the squalid piece of land

There the congestion can suffocate the life

I see smoke billowing out from a chimney

Somebody cooking and I wonder how life lives

The conglomerate of human being thrives on hope

The bizarre, these slums appear to be

My feet drag me into the narrow lanes

Smile of a child disarms me to read about them

Now, I see a world, where people too live

They live there and I hear a loud music

Oh! They celebrate too

Kids playing, ladies gossiping, everybody so living

From the lane, I walk towards the dirty streamlet

The stench filled my nostril,

I decide to retreat but no, I could not

The wafting sound of a stream softly catches my ear and I stop

The breeze wafts the scent of life towards me

A man greets me with smile and the street dog wags his tail

It’s late I must go back

I walk back into my broad lanes, dog barks, unfriendly

As an intruder, I walk through the barren street

No one to greet, no one to smile

Now, I wonder who lives where and why

What I now feel, dear Uttam, after reading your poem and watching the video, are tears sliding down my cheeks. It also makes me ashamed to ever complain when I think I should have more in my life. Thank you for this article, it is a reminder that I should be grateful to now have a roof over my head, clothes that keep me dry and warm, and food that fills my belly.

God forbid I should ever complain again.

Brings me straight back to the many people I have been blessed to know and work with..."things" are so irrelevant in the BIG PICTURE ...what is in your heart is where your wealth lies. Well done Uttam. :-)
