Life is hard. Bad things happen. People get hurt. Everyone has pain. The difference between one person's mental health and another is the way one deals with this pain. Some people pretend they don't have pain and some hold on to it like a badge of honor. And then there are other people who are aware of their pains, are open about them and strive to release them. The ability to release pain is impossible when someone can't see past themselves, where the ego rules all. Under this ruler the ability to release is not found. Release comes from accepting there is a big picture, this is faith. People who have faith face their fears and by doing so are rewarded with love.

I am sharing this with you because I believe God is love and both are tangible to me. This is what I choice to believe not because I am scared of the wrath of God but because I would not want to live in a world where love was intangible. It is because of love that I know Jesus and proudly call myself a Christian. It is also because of love, that my heart was filled with pain upon learning about Pastor Becky Fischer's camp for children that is featured in the movie Jesus Camp.

I do not understand why Evangelical Christians choice to teach grown adults much less innocent children about Christ through "fear and brimstone" methods. There is enough fear in this world, it is love that we need to learn more about. No credible child therapist would tell a parent to beat a child, so why would anyone think it was a good idea to teach children about God by preparing them to fight and be one of "God's soldiers." These methods of fear and guilt are the same scars that prevent many adults today from being capable of giving and receiving love.

Pastor Becky Fischer fails to show me that she is a responsible source for Christ's word for two major reasons. In the bible, Christ warns us about the material world and the seduction of consumption. Clearly, Fischer has not faced her issues of consumption. Her issues are the same issues that make obesity a global epidemic where children, the same ones she claims to love are paying the price for the unhealthy eating patterns of their adult role models. She also seems to have skipped over Matthew 22: 36-40 while reading the bible. Christ taught us the greatest commandment was to love God with all of our heart. He also told us to love our neighbor as ourselves. Fischer is not preparing these children to do either. I can only pray that love find her and these children. Love is where the real truth lies. We need more leaders that understand this, love is the difference the world is starving for, more fear will only put love further from reach.
