Oh! My God

by Uttam Gill (writer), BOMBAY(MUMBAI), October 16, 2012

watch the video

Let’s examine the ground realities of established beliefs and practices of religion…Are these an ACT OF GOD or that of human being? As I ponder, I say “Oh! My God….”

Today I saw a movie by name OH MY GOD and certainly, that moved me a lot. We all, so casually sign contracts to agree upon the contractual obligations, that on account of losses due to Act of God, the insurance cover is not available. Conveniently the God is inserted in the legal documents and THE GODS ACT CANNOT BE CHALLENGED IN ANY COURT OF LAW…However, in this movie a petitioner who incurs huge losses on account of, request court to summon messengers/custodians of God into the court for compensation. He pleads that since it is an ACT OF GOD, the God must compensate him and that’s how he drags priest of all the religion into the court and thereafter the hilarious drama unfolds the harsh reality of our so ill conceived belief on God.

Let’s examine the ground realities of established beliefs and practices of religion…Are these an ACT OF GOD or that of human being? As I ponder, I say “Oh! My God….”

Can you imagine world without a God. Have you seen a God? How he looks like? What kind of dress he wears…Where does he live. He is certainly a special one…The one who holds our life…the one who can make the world and destroy too…But why a creator should destroy his own creation. Why we all have to pray and to beg for his attention. Why God as believed, shower his/her blessings only over the disciples. Why need to have special place for God with splendorous display of ornaments, expensive chandeliers, and statues. Why all temples of Gods need to be huge. Why that priest needs to wear all kind of different clothes. Why is that we have an aura of mysticism around so called God’s seat in temples? Why we have to offer gifts to God? Why the animals are slaughtered to please the God. Is God so demanding…is he greedy or is he so difficult to be pleased. Do we really need priest to reach the God? Is God not accessible to common man? Why such impressions are in our mind that God is difficult to find or reach.

Are we, certainly so sure about God or we have wrong perceptions about him. Can God be merciless…Does he really get angry, but why he should be when he is the giver. Who has created this myth that God is some sort of entity, which holds enormous power of destruction for the ones, who does not follow him? And for others, who always chant his name is showered with his blessings? I don’t think that God can be so mean and can be manipulated.

Is God so intolerant, to frame the rules of blasphemy, under which, any individual can be punished to death. The natural hold over our wisdom says, God is not in captivity of manmade practices, dogmas and rituals. God is not pliable. Why in spite having this wisdom, we are not able rise above the dictates of many religious practices which are absolutely insensitive to human existence. Why certain religious practices have to make things difficult.

In the name of God millions of lives perished in many wars. Why in the name of God rulers have ruled for centuries and unleash the reign of terror. Innocents were brutally killed. I just don’t believe behind all atrocities there was a God’s dictate. We human beings have created the monstrous belief of fear. Why this fear is seeded in the mind of us that God is going to punish.

God is a creator…he is a protector…he is a giver…he is generous…he is merciful…he loves us…For God we all are equals… Oh! My God I just can’t believe that God needs to be feared…He needs to be loved...I have faith in God but not in draconian practices of religion and also refuse to get into the spell of dogmatic beliefs which are insensitive to the needs of human being. We owe our existence to God.

Awesome post Uttam and video!! I really enjoyed watching it. Great for meditation

No, I can't imagine a world without God. Have I seen him? YES, everyday in the eyes of those who know him.

Is God so intolerant, to frame the rules of blasphemy, under which, any individual can be punished to death. YES, the O.T. has much evidence of this and how HE's a very jealous GOD.

IMHO:

In the name of RELIGION is what killed millions of lives that perished in many wars.

I also know that God is a the creator of all things and HE's the protector…and giver…He is generous…and merciful…He loves usand wants to give us even more then we deserve.

Though I also believe : Psalm 111:10 -The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.

& Proverbs 1:7 - The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Well written Uttam... and yes, something I totally agree with...Religion to me is man made...where as your relationship with God is carried in your heart and actions...is not at all about organized religion to me or going to church... I do not believe in a punishing God...I believe in a God who forgives and loves us in spite of our mistakes...amen...I could never live in a world without God...just MHO...
