Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People?

If there is no struggle, there is no progress.

“Expect to have hope rekindled. Expect your prayers to be answered in wondrous ways. The dry seasons in life do not last. The spring rains will come again.”

In working with my clients I have seen so much pain and sorrow and I can not tell you how often I have cursed and asked this question. Why is it that such awful things happen to people? This in particular troubles me when it involves a child. Why is it that an innocent child is made to suffer?

Do we just live in a cruel world where there is no rhyme or reason? Is man innately good or evil? And why is it that some people have to suffer so much and others skate through life with a permanent smile on their faces ?

I know these are a hell of a lot of questions and I am unlikely to have all the answers in every situation. Something that I have witnessed so often over the years, is that the people who have struggled the usually go one of two ways. They become consumed with their pain and find many unhealthy ways of dealing with it. This then can become a life sentence in many ways. Or... often when the pain just gets to be "too much" they will finally be willing to make changes. You know the saying "hit rock bottom". Well in many ways it applies to most people.

People do not like change . Somehow it is more frightening then the "known " evil. Is it a defect of character or just human nature? Or is it that some people's learning curb is different? It could be a million different reasons just as we are all different in so many ways, so we then experience life in our own unique fashion.

There are others that seem to have evolved to a higher level of rationality. They have found that in some of the hardest times it is when they have grown in spirit the most. Personally it is when I question life the most....is just a part of my nature I think....and I am thankful for the grace to approach life in this fashion. It has been my salvation in many ways. Because it is the nature of things. You live, You love, you try to be the best person you can be. If you never experience the bad along with the good what did you really learn? Nothing. Everything we go through has a reason. These words, I recently found intriguing:

“…no man knows whether love or hate awaits him…"

And these words especially intriguing:

“The race is not to the swift
Or the battle to the strong,
Nor does food come to the wise
Or wealth to the brilliant
Or favor to the learned;
But time and chance happen to them all.

As fish are caught in a cruel net,
Or birds are taken in a snare,
So men are trapped by evil times
That fall unexpectedly upon them.”

From that, of these words I am reminded

“There is a time for everything…

A time to born and a time to die…
A time to kill and a time to heal…
A time to weep and a time to laugh
A time to mourn and a time to dance…

A time to tear and a time to mend…
A time to love and a time to hate
A time for war and a time for peace.”

*For grammatical animals like myself, bracket all ellipses...... So I ask you my friends....why do you think bad things happen to good people?

This article kinda goes along with my one on The Role of Luck in peoples lives. Bad things happening to good people is one of the great questions. A lot of it is just chance, much more about choice.

Great article, Barbara...

Thank you Randy...yes, in many ways I think most of us have asked a similar question...luck can and does play a part at times...so do "natural disasters" , (beyond our control...) but as you wisely say, so much has to do with making the right choices and learning from making mistakes...and not repeating them over and over...as so often a situation will continue to present itself (if even in another form)....until we do learn what it is we need to.

Thank you for your comment and review...:-) appreciated

oh and we need an edit button I think...lol...please read" the usually as they usually"... and "then the "known " as "than the "known" ...

Barb very well written article. You have totally immersed yourself while writing this because you intensely care about people decaying...As I understand you so well this post is an indicator that you are so genuine in writing...Barb life sucks and at times it certainly suck you so badly that everything goes hay why...One is pushed in such a hopeless condition that everything looks irretrievable...But yes with hope and very conscious efforts one can pull himself out of that mess and that’s where begin a journey with new hope...having going through hell makes anyone thereafter a much better person...In pain and sorrows good people are at worst to handle invasive emotions and in conflicting mode they let invasive alien to dominate them...I have lived through this and I understand...
