2012 Juneteenth Celebration in Leimert Park

Hundreds visited Leimert Park Village for the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Heritage Festival presented by Black Arts Los Angeles,June 16-17,2012.

2012 Juneteenth Celebration in Leimert Park

Los Angeles-The Black Arts Los Angeles recently held its 3rd Annual Juneteenth Heritage Festival in Leimert Park,June 16-17,2012.The celebration took place in Leimert Park and the Vision Theatre Backlot,in Leimert Park Village.

This all day cultural extravaganza featured an array of local entertainment,health and informational booths,face paintings,rock climbing,horse riding,line and square dancing and various merchandise booths.This years theme "Faith,Family and the Future," which spotlights African-American diverse cultures in Los Angeles.Each day featured a fashion show,with Gospel music and Praise dancing on Sunday.

I was able to attend day one of the celebration.The food,entertainment and informational booths captivated me all day.I arrived to Leimert Park Village just as The Wilbourn Sisters Designs were finishing up their fashion show,of one of kind dresses,hats and accessories.Their motto "one size fits most,carefree original designs,jazzy & sassy..." They design with you in mind.

The crowd and I watched in awe as Mayseo the Magician performed his magic with an amazing jazz soundtrack.Long Beach based soulful vocalist Rayshondra Angelle added a special touch to the celebration with two original tunes "Grooven," and "Rise" an appropriate tune as we gathered on this occassion to celebrate freedom.

Shoreline & Friends from the Inland Empire got down with some smooth jazz tunes,while Nate the Poet shared conscious raising rhymes down the street in Leimert Park.

Fabak Fashions designer Asia Idarous Khamsin clothings were on display during the afternoon Fashion show.Vocalist Maleeqa brought a lot of energy to the festivities during her brief performance.

The band Fusion offered additional grooven sounds with the tunes "Open our Eyes," "Caught Up," and "De'Era." The celebration concluded on a spiritual high note with a dazzling performance of vintage spirituals by singer Shannon Martin.

The crowd was invited to return on Sunday for another fun-filled Juneteenth Celebration In Leimert Park Village.
