The UN World Tourism Organization has appointed the Zimbabwe dictator Robert Mugabe, along with his political ally, Zambian President Michael Sata, as one of its worldwide "leaders of tourism," according to the Guardian.
Speaking in Victoria Falls, UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai endorsed Zimbabwe as a safe tourism destination, according to The Herald, Zimbabwe's state-owned newspaper.
If you know anything about Mugabe's record and life this event may appear slightly bizarre. Mugabe cannot travel freely around the globe due to USA and EU sanctions that were instituted because of the man's land seizures and human rights' record.
Reactions to the UN World Tourism Organization's decision, have been along the lines of those a British MP who stated that, "For a man who has destroyed his country's infrastructure and cynically engineered hunger to be an 'ambassador' for tourism is disgraceful—particularly as he has been personally responsible for the downward spiral of the economy and destroyed the hotel, travel, and tourism industry in the process."
If you are a gay tourist Mugabe's new position is non-pro gay travel so do not plan a gay vacay to Zimbabwe anytime soon. You know the safest country in the world to be hanging out on vacation anyway. Magabe does not support anything that has to do with gay rights, well for that matter human rights, as just as recently as last week Mugabe reaffirmed his utter-contempt for homosexuality.
