A Child Is Dead!

A poem for Trayvon Martin emphasizing the fact that a youth was shot dead for no good reason. Let us ensure this never happens again.

Breathes there a one with soul so dead

As never to oneself have said

No matter what excuses may be pled

A child is dead!

In a seemingly prosperous Florida town

A young black boy was wantonly gunned down

The police were summoned and quickly came

But the lad lay dead all the same.

Must we not all wonder why?

A happy, friendly child had to die.

He went to the store and was coming back

Then was slain for the crime of “walking while black.”

For too long this has been the case

People hating people based on race.

Fathers mourn and mothers weep

Are our consciences asleep?

Before there is an irrepressible outcry

How many innocents must wrongfully die?

All citizens of good will must take a stand

And drive this viciousness from the land.

Now we all must raise our voice

See the options and make a choice

This is too much; we’ll take no more

We must act now and end this dreadful horror.

Let this recent murder be the last

Banish it to a terrible past

Let it never again be said

A child is dead!

Amen...and this is the truth and people are finding a way to make it a political issue...very sad indeed...we are talking about the life of a human being...can we not just open our hearts and have some compassion instead of making it about what Obama said or did not say...

Thanks Barbara.

It is something I keep coming back to in the swirl of commentary and argument about this tragedy.

yah, you care only because you can turn a tragedy to a political game, you liberal never care about these young black man dying every minute in the project. every day 100 to a 1000 young black get killed in the street of America. never heard no one mention it. so much hypocrisy. the hip pop song glorify these, but you liberal don't event care. now yah i know you really care.

Another tender subject which may seem divisive, yet very few people understand the necessity of such a discussion. These kinds of deaths of young black children at the hands of white police officers are historically common spanning from the inception of this nation, slavery till now. Obviously there will be many who will protest this poem hailing it as a small token of reparation, rather than a beginning to the communicative path to truth. Because I understand the long held frustrations over this issue, as a reccomendation I would certainly allow for venting.

Keep all comments, don't vote them out, that's the only way to learn and remember the feelings of the oppressed.

Thank you Credo! Your wise and humane perspective is not only welcome, it is cherished.

You are absolutely correct about the long train of abuses and atrocities inflicted on blacks by white.

I call upon my white brothers and sisters to cease and desist. I call upon them to be as good as "the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence."

It is time to make good on the promissory note!

I continue to believe that black and white together, we shall overcome some day.

Thanks again!

Patrick,

I am a father, I was a teacher and a soccer coach. Without knowing me in the slightest you impugn my motives because can tell from what I right that I am a liberal [you are correct in that],

I have to ask, Have you no decency sir? Have you no open-mindedness; have you no generosity of spirit and sense of fundamental fairness?

What you writings and comments reveal to me is a reactionary, closed-minded, miserly soul. My you be happy in the course you are following.
