Making War on the Dead

Obama grovels while a new wave of ugly Muslim fanaticism is unleashed across the world.

My goodness, what is happening with America? Look, see; there is President Obama offering a grovelling apology as a crowd of Muslim fanatics go on the rampage after American troops burned copies of the Koran by mistake. He grovels as Americans die. What other president in history would have sunk so low? See how far a great country has sunk under the guidance of the new Great Helmsman.

Why, oh why, I continually ask myself, did the West ever get involved in wretched palaces like Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. Why did we not just leave the people in these dreadful countries to get on with their own clannish and debased lives? We wasted precious blood and we wasted precious resources in gifting ‘freedom’ that is no freedom. All we have done is uncork the bottle, letting out the genie of ignorant fanaticism.

I speak to you directly, an American audience, because I’m not quite sure if you are being given the full picture; if you are aware that the incident in Afghanistan has had wider repercussions across the Islamic world.

Look to Libya, where David Cameron, our shallow schoolboyish Prime Minister, helped to remove Colonel Gaddafi from power last year. What have we seen, a new birth of freedom perhaps? No, what we see is a country on the verge of anarchy, a country where gangs of armed Islamist thugs pay lip service to the ‘government.’ These people even make war on the dead.

Yes, they do; they make war on boys who died in battles long ago. Earlier this month, in the wake of Obama’s unmanning apology, a group of Islamists entered one of the cemeteries maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission outside Benghazi. It contains the graves of Allied soldiers, of many nationalities and many faiths, who died in the North African battles of the Second World War. There the gang set about systematically destroying the tombstones, laughingly recording their exploits on YouTube.

This video shows thirty armed men, some kicking the gravestones over, others smashing the cenotaph with sledgehammers. You can hear them shout, “Break the cross of the dogs!” They focus on one headstone, that bearing the Star of David for a Jewish soldier. “Jew! Jew!”, they chant, as the grave is desecrated. All this work near to a major city in the full light of day and there is no police presence, no intervention of any kind to prevent this supreme act of desecration.

We are not like these people. There is anger in England over this outrage but we do not behave as they do; we do not attack mosques or Muslim graveyards in retaliation. But we have to see this as part of a pattern across the world, with increasing attacks by fanatics on anything defined as non-Islamic. I wrote recently here about the plight of the Christian Copt community. I wrote on my blog about the dangers faced by Syria’s ancient Christian community if the muddle-brained Hilary Clinton gets her way and President Assad is ousted.

It really is time we woke up, people in England and people in America. It’s time we recognised the dangers to our values, to our civilization, to our way of life. It’s time we recognised the attacks on more universal values, the attacks on decency itself. Obama-style appeasement only encourages the beast still further.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Yeats? Oh, how I cherish you educated Englishpersons! :-)

You are certainly right, though - I am infuriated how many hundreds of millions of dollars of munitions that were expended by the American military (much less those of the UK & France) to make it possible for them to desecrate the graves of the men who died whilst liberating Libya from the Nazi's.

Wonderful article. I can assure you that myself, as well as a growing majority of Americans here feel the same way.

Oh, yes, we should never allow people in other cultures their freedom of religion, because, well, they might actually insist on the right to practice it according to their own dictates. Heaven forbid! Sure seems like another case of do as we say, not as we do.

CB, I have poetry at my fingertips!

Anyway, these people are vile. They make a mockery of the dead; they make a mockery of God.

Bum Bus, what on earth has this to do with freedom of religion? Bum Bus, generally speaking I ignore you because you are a complete troll, something that was obvious to me from your epiphany. But now you have shown to the whole community that you are not just a troll but a particularly stupid one. Go away, you sad, pathetic creature.

Wow, and articulate, too. Especially with distoring my name - very cute. Look, if you are going to put your point of view out there, then you'd best be able to hear from those who disagree with that viewpoint. As to whether I am a sad, pathetic creature, well, I'll let people who actually know me make that pronouncement. BTW - if we saw someone burning bibles, I suspect those for whom that book means a lot would be pretty much just as angry. Does that answer your question?

I think if somebody was burning bibles, some Christians would be quite angry. They'd probably be so angry they'd write a letter of complaint to somebody. I doubt they'd behave like those hysterical murderous superstitious savages.

LB, that's exactly what these people are.
