If you're reading this it may already be too late, for that I am sorry. For April 17th from noon till 8pm is FREE ICE CREAM CONE DAY at Ben & Jerry's. In the interest of jounalistic integrity I visited the six Manhattan locations (Brooklyn scares me) and scouted them all while filling my belly with delicious goodness for you, devoted reader.
3rd Avenue btw 10th & 9th streets
Very little line due to the fact that stoners in the east village generally don't succomb to the munchies till later in the day. They are also taking donations for the Breast Cancer Action Coalition. I ate the Chocolate Fudge Brownie and was awash in in a pool of fudge.
23rd St and 8th ave
About a ten minute wait. This location was collecting money for the NYC bike ride for AIDS. I succombed to Half Baked and started riding a sugar high that led me next door to a bar I love: Trailer Park. There I induldged in tater tots and actually heard my arteries beg for mercy.
Macy's 34th and 7th ave: 4th floor
Beware! In order to get to the Ben & Jerry's here you have to walk through a football field sized shoe department. The smell of feet is not an appealing appetizer.
On the plus side, this is the only location where every flavor is offered. I scored a creme brulee cone and fell in love with it. On the double plus side: nobody knows this is here so there is NO line.
Rockefeller Center: Underground
This location had the longest line of all. I stood for 45 minutes with slack jawed cubicle zombies as they waited for a brief taste of happiness in their otherwise meaningless 9 to 5 lives.
I had the Cherry Garcia and felt altruistic as I donated to their pet charity: The St. Stanislaus Losta Church. It was also around this time I began to cramp up.
43rd st and 8th ave
Not a long wait at all, considering it's right around the corner from the Disneyfied Times Square debacle. I had a scrumptious strawberry cheese cone and donated a couple bucks to The Dwelling Place a homeless women's shelter.
104th st and Broadway
After a 10 minute wait I pounded down my last cone of the day: sweet cream and cookies. This location had a face painter, but she refused to paint my face telling me that I was a little too old for such things. I hate her.
So, if you can, get out there and induldge in some free deliciousity. If it's already too late, start planning for next year. I will be.
