It was one of those summer days in the province when I spent my afternoon looking up and dreaming at the limitless azure sky. “Kayganda ng buhay,” (Life is beautiful) I shouted like a child, waving my arms to the distant mountains and hills. Then I sat down on the ground and sighed with pleasure, fascinated as every young leaf and blade of grass sways in the breeze. Such splendor and peace, I thought.
The exuberance of the day was spreading through the towering trees and symphony of the wild birds flying free. A great wave of tranquility came over, leaving me floating in happiness. Then suddenly I’ve heard a voice from behind, “Best time of the day.” I’ve turned around and saw my mother holding a book in her right hand. Smiling, she said, “I brought you a special gift anak, I hope that this will guide you as you journey into your college life. We are very proud of you.” I stood up and hugged my mother tightly. “You can read it now,” she added. And I ran in excitement until I have found a shade under an old tree to where I’ve first opened the pages of the book which have forever changed my life.
“The Greatest Salesman in the World” is a book interspersed with universal and timeless principles, written in a compelling, clear style that makes for a quick read. At first, it prompted me to ask myself, what makes the book so profound and, why would 36 million people find the parable of the salesman so unique and inspiring? I have realized that it is the compassionate understanding of what truly makes us human. For four years, through bad times and good, the book had been my unfailing source of comfort and inspiration.
First published in 1968, Augustine “Og” Mandino's classic remains an invaluable guide to achieving a life of happiness and contentment. “The Greatest Salesman in the World” is full of powerful life changing lessons that teach us how to succeed and live a life of achievement and positive perspective. The main highlight of the book is the “The Ten Scrolls of Success” which contains enduring principles on how to empower ourselves, how the world works and how one can overcome obstacles. The lessons of the scroll offer not a panacea for all the pains we feel but it is an important guide in order to triumph in our daily living.
The Scroll Marked I: Today I Begin a New Life
Patience is a virtue. Walking away too soon, out of impatience, robs us of life's choicest blessings. Habits are the difference between success and failure. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure. Therefore in order to achieve success, it is necessary to form good habits and become their slave.
The Scroll Marked II: I Will Greet This Day with Love in My Heart
Love is the greatest secret of success in all ventures. Without it, one will fail though he may possess all the knowledge and skills in the world. Love can be developed by always looking for the best in people. Look on all things with love and optimism. But in order to love others, we must love ourselves, treat ourselves with respect, and not be satisfied with anything but our finest efforts.
The Scroll Marked III: I Will Persist Until I Succeed
People are born to succeed, not to fail. Defeat will not be considered, and word such as quit, cannot, unable, and impossible are not part of the growing disciple's vocabulary. The prizes of life are at the end of each journey and it is not given to know how many steps are necessary in order to reach one’s goal. Every failure moves a man closer to success.
The Scroll Marked IV: I Am Nature’s Greatest Miracle
People are nature's greatest miracle. Each person is different in appearance as well as ability, and we should capitalize on, rather than despise, these differences. We each have eyes to see, ears to hear, and a mind with which to think. This is everything we need to thrive. We are here for a purpose which is to live life to the best and enhance our potentials to the fullest.
The Scroll Marked V: I Will Live This Day As If It Is My Last
Dwelling on the failures or misfortunes of the past is useless, for we cannot change them. Nor should we think about tomorrow. The present hours and minutes, pass too quickly and are gone forever, and so, they must be traded only for things of value. We must always strive hard to make every minute of today more fruitful than hours of yesterday. We should always treat our family and our friends as if today were our last day together.
The Scroll Marked VI: Today I Will Be the Master of My Emotions
We are masters over our emotions. Although we daily pass through different moods, each of us has the power to control them; to "create our own weather." If we bring joy and enthusiasm and brightness to all that we do, others will react in a similar manner. No matter what other people do or how they react, we can decide to be positive and understanding.
The Scroll Marked VII: I Will Laugh At the World
Man is the only creature who can laugh, and the best thing to laugh at is ourselves. Laughter puts events - successes as well as failures - into perspective. So long as we can laugh, we will never be poor. Only with laughter and gratitude can we enjoy the fruits of prosperity.
The Scroll Marked VIII: Today I Will Multiply My Value A Hundredfold
Seek out opportunities and experiences that will multiply in value. In order to multiply in value, we must set goals. We must not worry if we experience initial failure in reaching our goals; we compete only with ourselves. Upon reaching goal, we multiply again by setting another, and by striving to constantly make the next hour better than the present one.
The Scroll Marked IX: I Will Act Now
Our dream and plans are of no value without action. Procrastination comes from fear, and we overcome fear only through action. It is better to act now and risk failure, than to refrain from action and certainly flounder. Only action gives life significance. If success is offered now, we must act now.
The Scroll Marked X: I Will Seek For Guidance
A true believer will pray for guidance, not only for help. He calls on God not for material things, but for the knowledge to understand the way to acquire what is needed. Pray for ability equal to the opportunity, for good habits, for love, to use words well, to humbly forge through all obstacles, to reach worthwhile goals.
“The Greatest Salesman in the World” had empowered myself to become strong amidst challenges and had showed me the light to the righteous path. The book persuades us to choose life over death every day as we travel on life's highway. It doesn't matter if we are rich or poor. Each of us makes life-and-death decisions every second of our day. Every right decision we make will bring us closer to our goals while wrong choice may leave us hanging in time. Each of us has the power to celebrate or desecrate who we are.
After reading the book, I walked and climbed the highest rock and stood on the topmost point, gazing in awe to the wide valleys and rolling hills beyond. I looked up into the summer sky and shouted, “Today I Begin a new life, I will act now.” Far and clear, I have heard the reverberations of my enduring pledge.
