So, no surprise -Mitty's under fire, Newt's renigging on the "no nasty campaign" promise, Ricky is wallowing in a slight uptick from that old-news state where he lost and now was found - I-O-Way, and Ron Pauly is just staying on track, which is to say, as off-track as ever. This looks so much like a grade-school playground dust-up that I keep wondering when the Vice-Principal will come out and dish some serious butt-whomping on these miscreants. At least in my grade school, nobody spent $20 million plus to punch out someone's lights - usually just took a sock in the snoot, or dodge-ball.
The truly pathetic thing here is, of course, the shear number of negative sound bites they are making available to the Other Side once the real election battle begins. It has become pretty clear that distorting positive comments are usually percieved as cheap shots, while replaying really malicious lies can come back to bite your butt in a really big way. But apparently, the Righty's seem to like the butt biting approach. Who knew?
The other sad sack element of this primary season (like deer season, but the prey gets hauled home on the top of some gaudily-painted bus,) is how poor all the choices really are. But that is really just a result of how far to the extremes the Republicans have allowed themsleves to be dragged. It is pretty clear that, if you go to the outermost of the ideology spectrum, you sort of paint yourself into a corner - it's really hard to back out of the positions you have staked. And extremism also permits no admission of fault, so shame becomes a playa, mayor! Politics has become a game of never having to say you are sorry, and thus, self-immolation is the flavor of the day. Flavor Flav is really loving the rap potential here, I suspect.
I suppose, however, that the fringe tea party folks are still unable to admit any of this. Fundamentalists, political, religious, or sporting, can't even admit they may have miscalculated when the sky falls on their heads. It's just not a part of the dogma, and thus, is all "the media's fault." But the collective wisdom of the voters at the moment they enter the booth is a fickle mistress. Both sides take them lightly at their own peril. But especially the party that thinks they know what the "American people" really want. It's damn easy to delude yourself. It's another thing to believe you've succeeded in pulling the wool over everyone else's eyes.
Folks are pretty good at knowing the difference between a knit cap, and when you are pissing up their leg.
