Workin' 9 to 5...not a way to make a living?

by DarleneRH (writer), New York, April 13, 2007

Is it just me, or does it seem that the hours of the typical "big city office job" are constantly expanding? When I chose this line of work at the ripe young age of 23 or so, I simply did not realize that eventually I would be expected to not have a life outside of the office. Not to mention, I'm only in this line of work because I chose "office" over "restaurant" or "apartmentally challenged."

Everyone from the CEO to the Receptionists seems to be coming in earlier and staying later. The hours posted for open positions have gone from "9 to 5 with potential for overtime" to "8:30 to 6 plus major overtime." In some cases, both Managers and Assistants arrive around 7am, work through lunch, then leave at 7pm.

Does anyone else see anything wrong with this picture?

Let's talk money for a second, shall we? I think it's great. Some people like to claim they "hate money" because either it sounds cool to claim you don't need it, or they don't have any. If you're like me, you love money when you have it, and miss it a little when you don't.

Regardless, all the overtime pay in the world can't make up for having only 2 hours to yourself before passing out on your couch in the middle of Idol (shut up, you watch it too) or being asked to give up some weekend time to come in and "catch up on the paperwork." It's just not acceptable.

What's left of your world if it revolves around work?
Are you wondering why you are single too? Enough said.

Ladies and gentlemen, demand more from your employers and don't allow yourself to be steam-rolled into spending every waking moment in the cubicle. Easier said then done? Possibly. You'd be surprised, however, to see what happens when you just leave at your normally scheduled time. Just logoff of your dusty computer at 5-ish, grab your jacket, walk out calmly. I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised at how your time is actually respected, when you start by respecting yourself first. If after leaving on-time for a few days, if it doesn't work...then at least you tried and there is no harm done.

Those hair commercials had the right idea when they said, "You're worth it." You are. Now go meet your friends for happy hour, or get home to your kids... they miss you.

Let us all rise in a peaceful revolution and leave after 8 hours with a paid hour lunch. Just a side fact, in 2000 the average CEO's pay was 531 times that of the average worker. Go ahead. Do the math. I dare you. Viva la Revolucion!!!!!

In a capitalist system, the personal life of people are seldom considered apart of the business equation. Most of us working folks are unsatisfied, unhappy people because we work at a job that we don't enjoy, the pay is never enough, and their isn't enough time in the day for your personal obligations.

We can only derive some satisfaction if we aim for positions that stimulates our passions, which offers us greater opportunities, and more personal time to spend with our families, mates, friends, and time to pursue our personal interest.

Interesting post.....
