Ray Bradbury is alive!

Ray Bradbury was born in 1920 and graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1938. He is best know for his classic works The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451. He spoke today, Sept. 27, at the Santa Monica Public Library for a free book signing and lecture.

In a wheel chair, bad toupee and a jovial mood celebrating his 50th year signing books. His first signing took place two blocks from where we sat attracting a whopping 8 attendees including 4 family members.

He started as a writer in Venice selling newspapers and getting published in pulp magazines like Super Science Stories. From there he learned to write on Muscle Beach experimenting with new forms and ideas.

At the age of 42 he was paid to write for Pro Football Magazine an 8 page poem. This was the turning point in his career that he spent the previous forty years doing out of love. Bradbury claims, “Writing is not about the intellect, it is the about the ganglion.”

This was the reoccurring theme of his speech. Do what you love and do it with passion. His words, like his books, are inspirational and timeless. For over an hour he entertained with amazing stories and familiar places. He wrote Fahrenheit 451 in the basement of UCLA’s library on a rented typewriter. The name was changed from The Fireman to its present form after a fire chief told him, after UCLA & USC chemistry department couldn’t, the temperature that books burn. Bradbury got it published in the first issue of a new local magazine called Playboy.

If we all could live life with the passion, wit and humor of Ray Bradbury then this world would be a grand, mad place exceeding any science fiction fantasy.

daaaaamn! he's one of my favorite authors. Why do I have to be out of town when all the cool things happen at home?

I took it with my laptop when I was talking to him during the book signing. As you can tell by the picture he enjoyed trying to escape the computer's gaze.

This is a lovely article. I wish I'd known about this signing, I would have loved to attend. Access to classic greats is diminishing, and he sounds like a wonderful man. Thanks for sharing.
