DEA Launders Money for the War on Drugs

by Bessie Jewel (writer), Texas Hill Country, December 04, 2011

The New York Times reports that anti-narcotic agents have laundered millions in an effort to "see how the system works".

According to a December 4 report in The NY Times, anti-narcotic agents, primarily with the Drug Enforcement Agency, have both smuggled and laundered enormous sums of money in drug proceeds in their continued effort to infiltrate the powerful Mexican drug cartels.

The DEA has performed these under-cover efforts in other countries but began these tactics in Mexico only in the past few years. Because of the nature of the operations, cartels are often allowed to continue in operation for months or years before arrests are made.

Approximately 45,000 deaths have been attributed to the Mexican government's "crackdown" on the cartels in 2006.

A former senior official for the Drug Enforcement Agency, now working for a private contracting company by the name of Mission Essential Personnel, has stated that efforts were made to closely supervise the operations so that agents were not laundering money simply for the sake of laundering money.

I, for one, will sleep so much better tonight knowing that Mission Essential Personnel is keeping a watchful eye in the never-ending War On Drugs. After Halliburton in Iraq and Wall Street in New York it's reassuring to know that somebody's got a handle on all this!

Money laundering is the biggest challenge and this menace needs to checked...In spite of having required wherewithal the enforcement department of various countries are not able to control...drug trafficking is increasing...cartels managing this along with crime syndicates are making things more difficult for the regulatory and enforcing authorities in various part of the world...It is a huge problem

I would really like to know where all the money ends up. I was researching this and found in LA Times article where

a U.S. gun-tracing operation let firearms into criminal hands." Another federal op designed to trace weapons to Mexican drug cartels lost track of 100s of the guns and included 2 of the guns found at the scene the crime where 2 Border Patrol officer's were killed in Arizona. March 03, 2011|By Kim Murphy, Los Angeles Times

In this peration weapons from the U.S. were passed into the hands of people who were thought to be gun smugglers with the intent that they could then trace these guns to the heads of the Mexican drug cartels.

While money may not be as dangerous as guns it certainly can be "used" by those in possession in many different ways. This kind of operation is disturbing.
