You thought it's safe to ignore the warning label on Tylenol

UK researchers conclude that tiny overdoes of Tylenol can cause death

Think again because taking tiny overdoses of the recommended daily allowance can kill you.

Heading into the "Season of Cheer," where we are forced into close proximity for extended periods of time with the one's we love often causes an increase in our stress levels. Higher stress levels tend to lead to more headaches. A new study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology concludes that, when you reach for that Tylenol bottle, taking tiny amounts over the recommended dose may kill you.

Too much Acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol and many other pain killers, over a period of a number of days are known as "staggered overdoses." Deaths caused by liver damage due to staggered overdoses were higher, according to the researchers, than deaths due to deliberate suicides caused by a single overdose.

Staggered overdoses are difficult for your doctor to diagnose as the level of Acetaminophen in the blood stream is too low to trigger a warning when a blood test is done despite the fact that you are at at a high risk for liver failure and death. Add alchohol to the mix and the diagnosis becomes even more complex.

Johnson & Johnson, the maker of Tylenol, issued a lower dosing instruction for the painkiller in July 2011. The doctors say it's extremely important that humans that take Tylenol or acetaminophen based drugs adhere to the recommended dosage.

Uhhhummm & ...here's to wishing you a Happy "Headache Free" Holiday Season.

health is an issue which always makes us to take precautions...I know Tylenol is extensively used and many just don’t know the implication of doses...Over here in India there is too much of self medication and I always caution my family members and friends against this...they don’t know that that there is a slender difference between tiny over does and prescribed dose...as they have been doing it as practice they are exposing them to grave risk...Thanks Tony sharing with us this enlightening article.

It's the same way in Mexico as in India. I lived there for quite awhile and people would self-medicate extensively too. They would do it with drugs that are sold only by prescription in the US though in Mexico they can be purchased over the counter. Is that how it is in India too?

That's interesting. Medicine plays such a strange part in cultures from superstitions to the law. It's a weird juncture of power, money, life and death.

I heard about that but no one says what you should replace it with if you need to. Do they?

Why do you need to replace it. Just take what they say you should take and you will be fine. The danger is when you overdose (i.e. take more than the daily allowance) that you start to destroy your liver - and because it occurs at such low dosages the shit doesn't show up in a blood test so when you go to the doctor and tell him / her that you don't feel well doc is going to find it really difficult to diagnose that you are ODing.

this is a subject which needs to be taken very seriously...We assume things and that's how we tend to be casual that nothing would happened...we share the symptoms with our friends and get into self medication...I am sharing here the interesting link...

Great Job Tony. I once told an alcoholic about the dangers of acetaminophen and alcohol... he chose to stop taking tylenol. (shakes head and laughs)
