A friend of mine recently became obsessed with new pair of shoes that Fili has designed called Skele-toes 2.0. I do not believe that it coincided with the passing of Steve Jobs as they cannot be connected to your iPhone from the grave. The shoes do have a "iShoes" sort of look to them. So my question is whether these shoes are really designed for the "athlete," "active shoe wearer," "the trendy geek" or for Halloween?
They look somewhat like "gorilla feet" when worn and something that I doub't you'd want to be seen on YouTube wearing; unless you have just won the Gold Medal at the Olympic Games for the 100 meters and you are seen gliding, easily and comfortably into your Fiji Skele-toes 2.0s.
I imagine for fashionistas these are the ugliest pair of shoes, or close to being the ugliest, that they have ever set their eyes on. Yet there must be some redeeming features to them. In fact there are. The craze towards barefoot running is heating up and perhaps these shoes are somewhat like "safety wheels" on a bicycle. It's when you're not quite ready to take your shoes off completely though you're on your way to running long-distances sin shoes or having a pair of shoes that feels like you were born in the Garden of Eden.
Accorindg to Fila, "its EZ Slide feature… combines the smallest two toes for ease of entry. It also has four-way stretch, 2 ply nylon and crisp clean color-matched printing, as well as a bungee cord for ease of entry. Velcro straps ensure a customized fit as well as a multipurpose slip resistant rubber for maximum protection from those slippery surfaces. The Skele-Toes use a lightweight, four-way stretch 2-ply nylon material. According to Fila the material "gives" in the natrual way that our feet are meant to move. Fila’s has patented EZ Slide feature. This feature combines the smallest two toes of the feet of the Skele-Toes. This 2 toe merger is designed for a great ease of entry. If you're an entrepreneur perhaps a patent on the 3 toe merger is still available. Be very cautious however, even if you do get the patent, as Vibram FiveFingers, the originator of "toe-shoes" has already filed suit against Fila for "infringing several U.S. Patents held by Vibram. [As} The FiveFingers Patents cover a variety of footwear designs comprising individual toe pockets."
This has not slowed Fija down though. Coming soon to a store near you are the newest Skele-Toes from Fila. No they aren't Skele-Toes 3.0. Fila has obviously decided that they can't move to 3.0 until someone like a Tim O'Reilly coins that term for the web. For now Fija will call their newest arrivals the FIT Skele-Toes. According to SLAM ONLINE FIT is an acronym for - well 2 things:
"Fuel, Information and Training (F.I.T.) that it takes for both NBAers and laypersons to be at their very best in the world, as well as focusing on the literal Food, Intelligence and Technology that also comes into play in our physical fine-tuning—because after all, without having the vital fuel, guidelines and tech advancements to feed our bodies."
The difference between the original Skele-Toes is that the FIT model utilizes a foam midsole whereas the original Skele-Toes uses a solid rubber outsole. According to SLAM, "that while [the originalss] are durable, [the solid rubber] made long-lasting comfort more of a mirage than an actuality. The result is the FIT version of skele-toes are an improvement in comfort over the originals.
With Halloween around the this corner may be the perfect purchase as prices may be reduced with the new FIT model release. At $60 a pair however this is no consellation for a Halloween outfit though one night of wearing the rubber sole will likely cause no harm to anyone elses souls and likely make for a marvelous Halloween costume. They can then be used for going to the beach or grabbing your iPad and coffee on a Sunday morning.
For the fine tuned athletes among us it may be wise to wait until you can order the FIT version from Fila or purchase the origianl toe-sheos from Vibram FiveFingers.
