“The Jews are our Misfortune” – the Ugly Face of Protest

Credit: P. J. Tyler
It's those Nazi Jews

Who’s to blame for America’s economic woes? A president who has failed the country abysmally? No, it’s all down to the demonic Jews.

What is secular cult of the Jew? Haggling. What is his secular god? Money. Well then, emancipation from haggling and money, from practical, real Judaism would be self-emancipation of our age. The Jew is perpetually created by civil society from its own entrails.

Who do you think wrote that? Perhaps if I tell you that the author also referred to a another writer, one he did not like, as a ‘Nigger Jew’ you might have a better idea. Adolf Hitler, do you think, something possibly lifted from Mein Kampf? Or perhaps it was the delightful Julius Streicher, expressing himself freely in the pages of the equally delightful Der Stürmer?

Yes, they are reasonable guesses…but they are wrong. It was Karl Marx.

We associate anti-Semitism with the political right but actually there is a long history of Jew-hatred on the left, in the past disguised as anti-capitalism, the assumption being that capitalism was a world-wide Jewish phenomenon. You will still find echoes of these sentiments in the anti-globalisation movement, with people who associate certain forms of international enterprise with ‘Jew power’

But today you are more likely to find it in the liberal-left factions who take pains to identify with the Palestinian cause, the corollary of which is the demonization of the state of Israel. These people disingenuously tend to hide their hostility towards the Jewish people behind a hypocritical ‘anti-Zionist’ front, but the imagery, the language and the attitudes are those of the Old Adam. It would be easy to compile a left-liberal version of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the notorious forgery that acted last century as a warrant for genocide.

Now it’s in New York; now those who carry the anti-capitalist and anti-business banners in Wall Street have been joined by those shouting more racist slogans and displaying more atavistic passions.

Supported by the likes of Michael Moore, a lying propagandist very much in the style of Josef Goebbels, the Wall Streeters have taken to describe themselves as the 99%, a rather arrogant assumption. What they are in fact is the face of a particular kind of discontent, those who are looking for somebody, anybody, really, to blame for their problems. And who should be blamed? Oh, it’s not enough to focus on anonymous and greedy bankers; that’s far too abstract; for many they have to have a face; they have to be Jews.

The initial trumpet summoning the Wall Street mob, those huddled masses yearning to breathe the wealth of others, came from a Canadian-based publication called AdBusters, whose speciality is something called “cultural jamming” and anti-consumerism. These people once compiled their own reverse Schindler’s List, performing a ‘selection’ of Jewish people in an altogether sinister fashion. A few years ago they published the names of a number of prominent neo-conservatives, with black dots placed against those who are Jewish, all under a headline asking “Why won’t anyone say that they are Jewish?”

There is no such reluctance in New York. There people have been shouting that the “Jews control Wall Street” or “Jewish money controls American politics”, that Jewish bankers are the "greedy pigs" who are responsible for that nation’s economic woes, that America has been handfed over to ‘other people.’ Those who attempted to object to this were told to “go back to Israel”, rather ironic considering that these ‘anti-Zionists’ would also deprive them of that final refuge.

There is real venom here, make absolutely no mistake about that, as Nathalie Rothschild discovered when she wrote critically of the protests in the online journal Spiked. Afterwards came the deluge:

I received a string of indignant emails and tweets about my Jewish, kleptocrat banking connections; demands that I reveal the details of my pay checks and that I come clean about my not-so-hidden agenda. I was told that my family name disqualifies me from having any opinion about the protest and that I have ‘the karma of a demon’. One reader posted my article online, headlining the post ‘Journalist & Jew

How Streicher would have loved these people. Never, ever, has August Bebel’s observation that anti-Semitism is the socialism of fools found a more perfect illustration.

What alarms me in particular is the stunning hypocrisy displayed by the East Coast media, always anxious to uncover anything derogatory about the Tea Party movement. How can one fail to note the disparity here? Abe Greenwood, at least, has seen the ugly reality;

The Jew-hatred among protesters and sympathizers is diverse and unapologetic. It is, in fact, atmospheric. Tune in randomly to live television coverage of the spectacle and you’ll see—as I did—placards scapegoating Israel, Zionism, or "Hitler's Banker." Check out the continuous flurry of protest-supporting tweets and blog posts, and you’ll get more of the same.

Where the Tea Party couldn’t be tagged as racist no matter how hard liberals tried, Occupy Wall Street protesters are literally boasting of their Nazi credentials. This striking distinction speaks to the core asymmetry of the two phenomena. The Tea Partiers held up signs that read, “Don’t Soak the Rich”; Wall Street Occupiers’ placards counter: “Soak the Rich.” The purpose of the Tea Party was to get government out of all Americans’ lives. The point of Occupy Wall Street is to scapegoat fellow Americans. And wherever political scapegoating takes place, anti-Semitism is sure to follow.

It always happens when certain people look for scapegoats, some way of escaping from their own inadequacies, some demon to blame for their failures. It’s never in themselves, never about themselves, but all about the ‘other’, the all-powerful manipulator behind the scenes. The ‘other’ has a face and, in age-old fashion, it’s the face of a Jew. This is the bleak reality of Obama’s America, the bleak reality of the Wall Street Arabs.

Oh, I should add a word of explanation about my heading. It comes from Die Juden sind unser Ungluck – the Jews are our misfortune -, a phrase coined by the German historian Heinrich von Treitschke in the 1880s. It was later adopted by Streicher and appeared at the bottom of every front page of every issue of Der Stürmer.

I predicted this was going to happen. It was the logical conclusion for scapegoats. Why look to a government that has failed the people? Rather attack capitalism the very engine that has made America great.

Absolutely. As I said in a discussion thread on BC America seems to me to have lost all focus. It's no longer a case of ask what you can do for your country but what your country can do for you. We determine our own destinies. We should not wait around for opportunity to knock on the door.

Angie, thanks. I'm so glad you have understood.

This is from the Yeshiva World News, the transcript of an encounter on Wall Street, nothing at all to do with Hitler placard man. People can cherry pick all they like. One can have a little bit of ignorance and hate or a lot of ignorance and hate. In the end it all comes down to one thing: ignorance and hate, which spreads like a cancer. I'm going to return to this subject, the modern forms of left-wing anti-Semitism, no matter how much carpet-chewing rage it induces.

"Blatant Anti-Semitism at Obama-Backed Wall Street Protests! This morning at a press conference, president Obama came out in full support of the Wall Street protesters who are among others attacking banks and rich people. Here is the transcript between a Wall Street protesters and a Jew with a Kipa on his head: Anti-Semite: I am against corporations because they don’t pay me money…. Seven dollars an hour… Jew: Get a job. Anti-Semite: I have got a job, Mo. Jew: No you don’t. Anti-Semite: I do have a job. Jew: You are standing here… Bum. Anti-Semite: You are a Bum, Jew! Jew: What? Anti-Semite: I am a Jew. Why are you fighting with us. O… YOU HAVE GOT THE MONEY THAT’S WHY YOU ARE Fighting, you Jewish man… Jew: I have got the money because I have worked before.Snip… Anti-Semite: My mother died from a heart attack. Jew: What? Anti-Semite: What? Due? Du du du… you can’t even speak English. Are you Israeli? Go Back to Israel. Jew: Why would I go back? Anti-Semite: Go back to Sholom Israel. If President Obama understands that ALL Republican presidential candidates needed to condemn the three four people out of 6,000 Republicans at a debate who boo-ed DADT, then the President should come out and condemn this too.

Or you accept that the people who occupy Wall Street are a load of clowns not worthy of any recognition, or – as the president did – you validate them and as such you denounce any hateful anti-Semitic rhetoric coming from that camp. Obama and his backers cannot have it both ways!"

The above remark has been reported for what it is - a gratuitous and offensive personal attack. I will enter into no kind of direct exchange with this wretched, intolerant and unhappy man.

Any mass protest brings out the wing nuts and OWS is no exception. The protest is not targeting Jewish bankers, it's targeting all bankers. There will always be some crazies and like HurricaneDean says, they may even be there by design.

This is a pretty crooked country (aren't they all) and muckraking is old news. It makes for a dandy distraction. The bottom line is, this protest is aimed not at Jews but at greedy financiers who created bad loans on purpose so they could bet on their failure. These scumbags made millions, not one has been punished, and those of us who were counting on their homes for retirement can now go ahead an eat cat food.

Stay focused, folks.
