Buried Alive

Sunshine, smiles and love!

A reader writes in feeling helpless and hopeless.

Dear Shari...

I often see you speak about believing that things are going to work out for the best and we need to change our thoughts in order to change our lives but my question is: How can I get there? I'm shut up in my room at night very depressed. I feel all I get are scrapes and nothing really good ever happens?

--Trapped in my Mind

Dear Trapped in my Mind,

Well first let me give you a hug. A virtual one of course. Listen, I know life isn't easy sometimes and we all have things that seem like they are being thrown at us that are unfair. If I could rewind time and take you back to when you first started feeling overwhelmed by these things and life in general, I would! I would also show you how all of those "obstacles" that actually showed up in your life were blessings just masquerading as problems. But here we are, and we can't go back, so it's time to actually put in the work. First things first. You need to get out of your room. You need to turn some lights on in the house, play some music that you love really loudly, smile at yourself in the mirror and say out loud, "I am done! I am finished with this pity party and I'm finished allowing outside "stuff" to cloud who I know I really am! I am strength! I am beauty! I am love! I am done with being a victim and I'm ready to take my life back!" (Of course while you're doing this, make sure no one is around. You don't need to be locked up in another place.)

So here is the thing, once you announce to yourself and the world that you are ready to be done with feeling sorry for yourself and you're ready to take control, that automatically tells your spirit that you're good. That you're ready for good things and you're ready now. That doesn't mean that "bad" things won't happen but it will change your perspective on what is actually "bad" and "good". You'll come to find out that EVERY THING has meaning and EVERY THING on your path is to make you better and stronger. One of my favorite quotes is by Lao Tzu and it says, "The obstacle is the path." Of course none of this will mean anything if you don't first feel you are worthy of a good life and blessings. That is the ultimate show-stopper of joy if you aren't feeling good enough to receive life's blessings because if that's the case, even when they show up, you won't even be able to recognize them. You're so far down that you're on the ground looking at the ugly shoes it's wearing that you don't even take notice to the hand outstretched to you wanting to pick you up. Nobody ever said all of life was going to be easy, but if you figure out what is truly important in this world, it will make it a hell of a lot simpler. Of course all of this takes work, as does anything that is worthy of your time and attention. I know you can do it and are deserving of it. Now you just have to decide if you are! Now turn that music up! You got this!
