Whether our life circumstances be happy or harsh,
We have the chance to send forth a ripple even when we cannot make a wave.
From a mountain of despair,
We can work to cleave a stone of hope.
Into an ocean of dismay,
We can cast out a rope.
The world abounds with frightening stories.
Tales of woe in our ears ring.
In turbulent times, fear commonly springs,
Clutching our hearts and ripping our souls on beating bat wings.
We ask of ourselves, “Oh, what can we do?”
For comfort and aid, whom can we turn to?
The answer of course is as it ever has been,
When dangers rage everywhere find courage within.
If one looks toward the heavens or deep in one’s heart,
The source of resolve is the first place to start.
If we tremble, cry, and let the world go down in flames.
Those who perish within them will scorn us and curse our names.
It is not that it is easy; it is not that it is fair.
There is no one else for it so we simply must dare.
Though struggle and pain are the likely reward,
There is too much worth saving not to step forward.
Let us stand up for our cherished ideals.
Let those who would dominate learn how brave opposition feels.
From numerous acts of courage and belief,
Let those imperiled feel a ripple of hope and some hint of relief.
As these million of ripples cross one another from each cardinal direction.
Let the walls of injustice and oppression succumb to correction.
If we should stumbe and if we should fail,
Let the fact that we fought be our legacy's tale.
Though we are not all powerful, we must each strive to be brave.
Let us send forth a ripple when we cannot make a wave.
