President Obama has effectively put his political future on the line by saying he wants victory in Afghanistan by the end of his first four years. If that doesn’t happen, he may not get a second four years.

Obama in another well thought out speech, his strongest attribute, feels we have to win in Afghanistan if we are going to defeat terrorist activity aimed at America. In a mishap that the authorities are labeling as "an insider’s mischief", about 55 workers of the Kaiga Atomic Power Station in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, India, were exposed to an excessive radiation dosage when they drank water that had been mixed with tritium, a highly radioactive substance. All the workers had to be rushed to hospital for a preventive check-up.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari transferred control of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. He also revealed his intentions to strip the office of President of more powers by year-end. Zardari also gave up the powers of the Chairman of the National Command Authority which controls the country's nukes and transferred them to the Prime Minister late Friday night.

At least eight people have been killed in an explosion that happened at Arsenal 31, ammunitions depot on the outskirts of Ulyanovsk, 900km (550 miles) south-east of Moscow, Russia. This explosion comes within 10 days after explosions tore through the same site, the defense ministry says.

A bomb disposal squad was working on the site, loading live ammunition onto a lorry when the blast occurred. All the people killed are reported to be members of the squad. In a deadly attack that is being seen as one of the worst incidents of election-related violence in the Philippines, 21 people have been killed after a group of about 100 gunmen took a group of 36 people hostage. Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner, a military spokesman in Manila, said 21 bodies had been recovered in Maguindanao, a province in the southern Philippines that has often been wracked by violence during elections. In a series of two blasts triggered in the Lower Assam town of Nalbari, at around 9.45 am on Sunday, at least 7 people have been killed and more than 50 have been reported injured. Police sources have named the terrorist organization, United Liberation Front of Asom, (ULFA) to be behind the blasts.

A deadly gas explosion has killed at least 42 miners and trapped more than 60 others, in a Chinese mine on Saturday. The incident occurred at about 2.30 a.m. when 528 people were working hundreds of feet underground. Rescue workers reported that about 400 workers successfully escaped the mine. The Xinxing mine is in Heilongjiang province, which borders Russia and is owned by the Heilongjiang Longmei Mining Holding Group.
