I’m no expert...but I’d like to give a voice to the millions of people suffering and dying from cancer. I’m no expert, but I’m very familiar with cancer as it has taken away my mother, my aunt (her sister), many cousins and threatens to do even more. Cancer being what it is isn’t the issue I want to give voice to...but cancer being what it’s not: eradicated.
To be logically fair, there are so many types of cancer effecting so many different people that it may never be fully eradicated...but I’m a firm believer that more can be done to combat it and that the key to more successful treatments... Read More
I think the title of this post says it all...but for those that don’t realize and understand the standard by which we all live under...the complete “industry” health has become, you need not remain ignorant as we are about to take a trip down a particularly unpleasant rabbit hole.
I’d like to say that I remember the good old days, but they were good and gone by the time I showed up on the scene. I heard about a time when doctors cured and treated ailments because they took an oath to do so...not because it was profitable. I’m not saying doctors shouldn’t get paid...I think they should,... Joseph was six months old, laying on his back in this crib, while two-year old Ruth sat at the other end, playing with a few pennies in a tiny change purse. I was washing the bedroom floor when suddenly Joseph started coughing and then screamed as loudly as he could. I dropped the mop and ran over to scoop up a frantic baby.
"What happened?", I asked Mara.
She kept repeating, over and over,
" Penny down thwoat, penny down thwoat."
"There is a penny down his throat?", I questioned.
Ruth nodded but by this time Joseph had stopped crying.
I peered at... Read More
I have asked myself this question many, many times, and I always come back to the same conclusion: I refuse to live my life taking prescription drugs, no matter what the cost. It is my life, after all!
For many years I watched my younger brother, who had kidney failure, going through weekly dialysis—blood cleansing, 3-times a week, and each session lasted about 4-hours (not including hook-up and take-down time)—and I saw his great unhappiness, watched the zest for life he once had flow right out of him. Until one day, at age 30, he stopped treatments and gave up on life.

Picture these two separate scenes.
In the first vignette, a smiling young woman with a cumbersome backpack, leans with both hands on a walker as she edges towards heavy doors leading to a lecture hall. Before she can even touch the handle, two young men sprint up, open the door and solicitously offer to carry her bag till she is sitting comfortably at her desk. She is an accepted part of the young men’s social group. Her disability, although permanent, does not repulse the other students but elicits empathy.
A diametrically opposed scene focuses on another young, pretty woman... Read More
In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s very easy to become complacent and take certain aspects of life for granted. Everyone is guilty of it at some time or another. I have recently found myself in this category as I paused one day to ponder my circumstances. In reflecting, I remembered that I live in a country where freedom is a right that is precious and most revered. “The land of the free”...but there are some notable exceptions that I find disturbing.
When it comes to the medical industry...and everyone should have an issue with those two words being coupled together, the idea that... Read More
