About a month ago my five year old daughter said to me, “Daddy is Mickey real?”

She was referring to the one and only Mickey Mouse. She went on to say, “Laura at school said Mickey isn’t real?”

I said, “What do you think?”

She said, “I think he’s real. He’s magical. But I don’t think Goofy or Donald or any of those other characters are real.”

I said, “Why?”

She said, “Because they don’t have tongues. They can’t eat without a tongue. But Mickey has a tongue. I think he’s real.”

I smiled inwardly. Seemed like pretty solid reasoning to me!

"Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: "Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." Isaiah. 6:8I received a call the other day! It went something like this: "Mr. Lilley, this is your dentist's office. We just want to remind you of your appointment at 10:00 AM tomorrow." I knew it was a call because my phone rang. I know it was from my dentist's office because I knew I had an appointment for a check up tomorrow. Besides that, the dentist's phone number and name appeared on my caller ID. There was no doubt that at 10:00 AM tomorrow I must be sitting in... Read More

When I was a child, my parents were my heroes. As a teenager, I often viewed them as adversaries. As I became an adult, they became more like great friends. Once that happened, I learned more about who my parents really are and were before my sister and I popped into the picture. And, I came to realize--as I think most of us do--that they are, well, kind of awesome. Blogger Eliot Glazer had the same realization. In fact, he not only realized his parents were awesome, but that all of our parents were awesome too. To celebrate this fact, Glazer has created a photoblog called My Parents Were Awesome.

With the economy in shambles, many parents are struggling to find a way to create that magical Christmas for their children. I myself was facing this same dilemma, trying to conjure up ways to put on my "mommy" face and not let them know that this year Santa was broke. While looking over the abundance of toys they have acquired over the years, I was struck with an idea... an idea that is so anti-modern Christmas that it just may work! Substituting presents with memories! What?! How can someone pull that off? It's actually easier than I thought, and here is how:

Step One: Assess your... Read More

I was impressed by the turnout. There had to be at least a hundred parents jammed into the elementary school cafeteria on a rainy Sunday afternoon trying to get their kids signed up for soccer. No one even played soccer when I was growing up. We played football in the fall.

Not that I have anything against soccer, although, truth be told, I don’t really understand all of the rules. I’d been meaning to learn.

“We’re short one assistant coach for the 7-8-year olds,” said the league president, spying over the top of his bi-focals for volunteers.

I had a 7-8-year old.... Read More

I remember a time when people asked me if I wanted kids and my response was “I don’t know” or “not right now”. I had a great career, a hot little bod, a cute MINI Cooper, and an active social life.

And then… It happened!

I remember lumbering around in my newly pregnant body looking at the moms clucking like hens on my street, or drinking their coffee in the park and thinking “I’m not like them.” I just didn’t see myself in their shoes.

When my girls were born (yes “girls” - I had TWO at one time) it was the most amazing moment of my life. The first year was incredibly hard... Read More
