I was impressed by the turnout. There had to be at least a hundred parents jammed into the elementary school cafeteria on a rainy Sunday afternoon trying to get their kids signed up for soccer. No one even played soccer when I was growing up. We played football in the fall.

Not that I have anything against soccer, although, truth be told, I don’t really understand all of the rules. I’d been meaning to learn.

“We’re short one assistant coach for the 7-8-year olds,” said the league president, spying over the top of his bi-focals for volunteers.

I had a 7-8-year old.... Read More

I remember a time when people asked me if I wanted kids and my response was “I don’t know” or “not right now”. I had a great career, a hot little bod, a cute MINI Cooper, and an active social life.

And then… It happened!

I remember lumbering around in my newly pregnant body looking at the moms clucking like hens on my street, or drinking their coffee in the park and thinking “I’m not like them.” I just didn’t see myself in their shoes.

When my girls were born (yes “girls” - I had TWO at one time) it was the most amazing moment of my life. The first year was incredibly hard... Read More

November is Premature Baby Awareness Month and the BloggersUnite.org, an online social cause network, has joined with the March of Dimes to raise awareness and money by holding a blogger action day this coming November 17th. In the U.S. alone, 1 in 8 babies are born premature. In lesser developed countries the rate of premature births is even higher.

Premature death is a health crisis that threatens the lives and health of nearly one half-million babies each year. It is the number 1 killer of newborns and often time leads to lifelong disabilities. The number of premature births has... Read More

For many people the heightened expectations of holiday gifts and having to be jolly has the exact opposite affect. While outwardly they smile and laugh, many people go into deep depressions, during this time of the year, resulting in the highest suicide rates of any period.

Here are 10 effective and powerful ways to eliminate the holiday blues, reduce your stress level, be jolly and experience a joyful spirit.

1. Be grateful. Every day you wake up and go to sleep ask yourself the question, "what am I grateful for in my life"?. When one is grateful our fear's disappear... Read More

This article is for all my male readers who have children and are responsible fathers. Married or not, but primarily not. I want to give you a hand because you are the population that the courts don't see in custody cases. This a little glimpse into my personal life, but I think the world needs to know that there are great fathers out there.

My boyfriend unfortunately a product of an "accidently on purpose" baby. Unfortunately the baby mama's plan didn't work out so well and needless to say they haven't been together. He felt it was his responsiblity (but I say he was brain washed)... Read More

I've been noticing with greater and greater alarm that atheism is getting more and more popular in literary and academic circles. In fact, the majority of writers and scholars believe that anyone who believes in God must be naive and stupid. You aren't smart enough, aren't sophisticated enough to realize that God doesn't exist and that life is pretty much shit. As the old saying goes, misery loves company. Now I don't claim to be some highfalutin intellectual (fingers corn cob pipe thoughtfully for effect) but my great grand-daddy left me with at least this much sense: anything that makes... Read More

I haven't written for Broo in a while. I had a stroke about three weeks ago, and my writing ability has regressed to a high school level.

I was writing one morning and all of a sudden, without any warning, I couldn't read anymore. I decided I was probably wiped out by working too hard (12-14 hours, six days a week) so I decided to take a nap. One hour later I woke up and watched The View. Barbara Walter and Whoopi may have made the stroke worse. Can I sue them now?

I knew I was in trouble when I couldn't recognize Mickey Mouse. At that point, it was time to get to the hospital.... Read More
